Anyone seen the "One" folding bike?
on: August 03, 2007, 08:47:26 PM
It looks pretty neat:

Quote
One’ provides a real solution to the problems involved with urban transport. With congestion rapidly clogging up the roads the need for products that can free individuals from their car are in real demand. When open, ‘One’ is a comfortable stylish bicycle that not only offers all the benefits of cycling (like cheap travel and exercise) but with its revolutionary power assist system the user can cruise around with ease. When folded, ‘One’ turns into a smooth, light and compact case free of all dirty and protruding parts. ‘One’ can be easily carried, stowed and stored. ‘One’ is truly a bike for eco and money minded individuals alike. Its stylish design strips it from the folding bike stigma and makes it a bike for the 21st century.

That One bike- how do you pedal it?  I see pedals, but I am wondering how that transfers to the wheels?

As for the Brompton, I have pieces falling off my car- I don't need a bike that does it too! :P

I think it's suposed to be belt driven,

Quite a few bike manufactures are looking in to using kevlar belts now, so it might be belt driven but i doubt they'd work in a tight space like that!

I thought of that as well, but I don;t see any way for the belt to effectively contact either wheel.  The only thing I can think of is that it's only powered by the electric motor, and you have to pedal like crazy to keep the battery charged?

I'm thinking that steering that One bike would be a chore as well. It appears that the front wheel pivots just ahead of the seat post.
In order to be certain of having the right tool for every job.........one must first acquire a lot of tools

That would be my take on it as well.  Maybe these are the reasons why this thing never went anywhere?

Let me take the Raleigh out for a 60 mile tour, and y'all start posting pics of noveau art! The concept behind is likely logical and sound, but it just looks  ungainly.Folders are gaining popularity, but maybe The One is a bit too ahead of it's time

Just like in the automotive industry, there are a lot of concept bikes that never see the light off day.

I'm glad the One exists, but you would'nt see me on it ;)

I know you guys say that folders are much better than they were, and I believe you, but I'm still a little leery.  The last time I tried one (which admittedly was almost 15 years ago) it felt pretty rickety, and at anything over about 20kph it felt like the world was going to end!

60 mile tour eh?  Must have been a fun ride!

That 60 miler was a lot of fun,I'm kinda feeling it this morning though.Next time it's a metric century for me! 15 years of improvements have gone on,I bet if you tried something like a newer Dahon, you'd be pleasantly surprised.
Many years ago,in the 60's IIRC,a car maker was trying to gain a toehold in the US market. The maker, and I can't recall which one, offered a free folder as an enticement to buy one of their cars.
I'm with you Micky, the luddite in me wants my bike to look like a bike.

So how long did the 60 miler take you?  Also, what tool(s) did you take with you?

I'll soon be posting pics of my favorite steel frame bikes:
 Raleigh Wyoming-----"The Empress"
 Diamondback/Centurion Interval-----"The Greyhound"
 Giant Nutra------"The Junkyard Dog"

I had things fudged a bit in my ride,I planned it so there'd be just minimal rises,no steep hills, actually riding time was about 3.5 hours....us 50 yr old geezers need to make stops occasionally.I took the Bell bike multi, and a LM Mini-Tool,plus levers, spare tube, patch kit,and cell phone.
Oh yeah,health insurance card :-[

I'm so out of shape it would take me longer than that to drive 60 miles!

I'll be on the edge of my seat waiting for pics, especially of that Bell bike tool!

You're all in luck, the bikes have agreed to a photo-op  A pic of the Bell will have to wait a few more days,my daughter's coming in from Minnesota this coming weekend, and her camera is several orders of magnitude better than mine....she owes me a few pics.

Maybe we can trade- I'll send you a bike tool, you send me a bike! :P

Of course I am certain Mrs Bison would appreciate another tool in the house just as much as Mrs Defender would appreciate more bulky "junk" in ours!
