Is 4 years old too young for first MT?
on: May 10, 2010, 08:32:19 PM
My Son has seen me mess with Multi tools his entire life.  Anytime something in our house is broken he will come to me and ask for the SOG,  He has the sickness like I do lol.  So when he recently seen the new Micro Toolclip on the internet while I was looking at them.  He instantly said "I want a Blue SOG,  Daddy you get Black SOG, Mommy gets a Pink SOG."  He got it all figured out really quick.

My question is,  would it be appropriate to let a 4 year old play with one?

The knife blade would be removed of course.   He has a toy tool set that is all metal,  and he's never had any issues with those tools.  That tool set also includes a small pair of metal pliers,  he's never pinched himself or anyone else with them.  I keep all of my tools up to where he can't reach them or on my belt so he has never touched one without my supervision,  With the tool clip I'm sure Id watch him when ever he had it out.  But I'd like to be able to let him walk around with it in his pocket.

Surprisingly my wife thinks he is ready to have one.  Please give me your opinions.

I've got to agree- I got my first SAK when I was only a little older than your son, although it still had the sharp bits on it.  I learned fast that I'd rather keep the red stuff inside!  :D

Still, my parents looked after me with it, and taught me to respect it and most importantly, keep all parts of my anatomy away from the closing blades!

I know I'm thinking of something similar for my daughter and she's just turned five, so I say go for it.

It really depends on your four year old.

I know one who has "mature moments", but I really don't think I could trust him full time to remember it's not a toy.

I don't see any reason why not. Pull the knife out for now and let him have it. Great way for him to learn. Once he gets used to it and is a bit older, throw the knife back in later on down the road.

I don't think there should be any problem

As I recall I got my 1st knife at 5 or 6

Thanks for all the suggestions everyone,

The wife and I both think he is ready,  and we are gonna go for it if SOG ever releases the things.  I just hope it's easy to remove the blade,  It looks like the screw that holds on the pocket clip also holds in the blades.  It would be nice if that's the case and I can easily remove the blade without damaging anything and that way when he gets a few years old I could put the knife blade back in.
