Wanted: A Decent Firesteel
on: May 07, 2010, 05:19:14 PM
Looking for a decent firesteel please :D

I have one of those skimpy ones you get in the BCB kits; it works but is difficult to hold  :-\

Me and my son actually started a fire with the firesteel and vaseline cotton balls  :tu: Not sure who was more impressed me or him :D

Hence the reason why I'm after something more substantial for our summertime camping  :tu:

Thanking you in advance  :salute:

These are among the best from what I've heard (probably the same as Mr. Whippy's)... Never owned one though...

Yup, the "light my fire" steels are just fine and are easy to find in the UK.  I actually use the smaller 'scout' size myself and have no real problem.
Be excellent to each other and always know where your towel is.

There's no need for a name brand steel, the metal is all the same. I use a 3/8" by 4" no name one and it'll light anything a name brand would.

I'm liking Magnesium Fire Starters at the moment. Much more fun and you can do "genies" if you're prepared to sit there and file the shavings small enough :D

I used to come here a lot.

Found this at Heinnie's for £5.95  :tu:

Think it's the same as you mentioned Dave. Might look at adding one to my next order :D

I have one of those.  It works pretty well, although the firesteel doesn't throw as many sparks as the Swedish one.  (But the Mg shavings are an awesome touch!)
