I would like to know how you guys(guys being a general non gender specific term honest) put an edge back on your tools and S.A.K.s

I use the Sharpmaker, sticking sticky-back strips on the stones for the more difficult jobs. Good thread, I look forward to reading what the rest of you do!

For everything from SAKs to big blades I've been using a simple ceramic rod.  The edges of my SAKs feel like the edge of a fresh sheet of paper...nice and crisp (and will easily slice if you move your finger).

I mostly stick to a dog bone type sharpener.  I know lots of folks swear by the Sharpmaker but to me that's too gadgety.  I like dog bones because they are portable, but for the big jobs I use a Norton India stone.

I've used a flat DMT stone before but I don't think I'm as good at sharpening as I originally thought.  Recently it's been a Sharpmaker for my use.

I use a sharpmaker for all my knives when I'm at home, but when I'm at work or the woods then I've got a DMT duo fold stone.

But to answer the question, Sharpmaker.  Afield, I use either a cardboard strop or the spine of another knife, if available.  I have never actually needed to sharpen anything that couldn't wait until I was back home.

1. Lansky system with blade clamp and sharpening stones with guide rods to control angle of attack:
-fairly idiot proof, it allows even me to produce a very sharp edge.
-works well for re-establishing edges on knives that have been abused.
-great for quickly touching up user knives with a keen edge.

2. Gerber retractable diamond rod sharpener with clip for shirt pocket:
-very convenient to carry.
-will quickly restore a dull knife to usable sharpness out in the field.
-groove to sharpen fishooks.

3. Ocassionally, a big black whetstone mounted in a hardwood case that was given to me by my grandfather.  My grandfather got it from his grandfather, so it's well over a century old.  Capable of producing a very fine edge if you aren't in a hurry.

Yes, as a matter of fact it does.  Remember watching my grandfather sharpen knives with it when I was very young, maybe four or five years old.

They may come up with all kinds of gadgets and gizmos to help you sharpen, but if you can handle a benchstone, you will never have a dull blade!

It's an art, but well worth learning.

I don,t now about you guys, but there is something special about using benchstones, It's, I don't know, calming.

I use a bit of everything I guess.. the Lansky system.ceramic sticks, and an old fashioned whetstone.I think knowing how to put an edge on a blade with a whetstone is  an one essential skill.

I think if you master a bench stone you are pretty well good for anything.  All the other gadgets and gizmos are just variations on the bench stone.

I seriously need to break down and buy a sharpener.  I use a $3 "v" notch thing I picked up at a department store.  It works well for what I need... but I want something better.

My father showed me how to use a good oil stone when I got my first SAK in around '83 or so.  Since then I've used different stones and methods, but I find the best method for me is to constantly touch up edges on a dog bone rather than getting the benchstone or any fancy kits out.

Keep it from getting dull and you won't have to sharpen it!   ;D

Yup- that it does, but I suggest wearing suspenders if you are going to do that.  The last thing you need is a Bobby to stop and ask why you are holding a knife in the middle of the street with your pants around your ankles!   :grin:
