Support MT.O: Support the site you love!!!
on: May 26, 2010, 08:00:46 PM
Fact: It takes money to run a forum
Fact: Most of the cost of the running a forum is on the owner of the forum
Fact: Most forum owners don't like to ask for money
Fact: Most of us don't do enough to support this fantastic site   :D

I've noticed that Charter Memberships are down. If you love MT.O as much as I do, why not do a little to support this site? If you can't afford a Charter Membership, then why not send Def a small dontation. I'm sure he would be happy to send you a Paypal link.   ;) Every little bit helps...   :tu:

Nobody asked me to post this, but I feel that if you enjoy this site then you should do your share to support it.

Hmmm... no cash on my end, but I do have some gear I could sell auction style.  I'll have to look in my box of evil to see what I can spare.

+1! :tu:  I never expected to do so, when I first found this site, but I've gone ahead and become a charter member too.  Why?  Because I've been on online forums for over a decade now and this bunch simply is the nicest and most helpful I've ever found.  That alone, after so many years of watching forum bickering, was enough to garner my support.

Maybe I was just caught up in the euphoria of realizing there are other blade loving weirdos out there and I'm not alone....

I'm hoping to have the funds this pay day to do so myself. I like to get the little pin and tool thing for my membership that alone is an awesome reward for helping this site that I feel welcome at and enjoy. I haven't been here long but I feel more accepted here then on forums I've been on for a couple years. :tu: One little thing I wish it would allow mobile users to see pics and smilies from there phone like other forums do. I use my phone 99% of the time due to my work schedule.

You're one of us now...  :D     The great thing about membership support is that the $$$ that comes in helps to fund upgrading the software, etc. I'm sure a few software updates would be awesome and maybe they will have what you're looking for.  :tu:

That's actually one of the great things about the software we use- Simple Machines Forum software is Open Source, which means it's free, as are many components.  And, since the source code is open to anyone (unlike the Big Boys' software!) it's free for anyone to build components, most of which are shared with the community, meaning if there's an idea for something we want, chances are someone has already thought of it and designed an addon that we can download and install.  We are very fortunate that Esteban (the gentleman who originally built this site for those that don't know!) is something of an Open Source Junkie, and he recommended this software for us.  I was initially very leery about using "free" software, but it's proven itself to me time and time again, and I'd have no complaints even if I did pay for it!  I am sure we can come up with some way of making the forum more accessible by phone, but I'd mention that to Whoey (Micah) or Mcniac (Esteban) since they know a hell of a lot more about that stuff than I do!

Of course, there are other expenses, like server fees, which recently almost doubled since we went to a dedicated server after we maxed out our old server company!  GG is right- while the Charter Memberships and small amount of advertising we have done is certainly helping, much of this site is paid for out of pocket.  I'm not complaining- it was my idea, and no one held a gun to my head to do it, so I've no one to cry to if I was so inclined!  Still, if we had increased funding, we'd have a lot more features.  We currently have several projects in limbo because of funding/budget issues.

Anyways, I appreciate any support anyone wants to give, and we have recently started a few more incentive plans for Charter Members, so it is a good thing to sign up for.  It has always been my plan to provide benefits for Charter Members without "punishing" those who don't have the money or the interest in becoming a Charter Member.  I absolutely refuse to limit regular members the use of anything like avatars, signature lines etc simply because they haven't sent me money.  Some forums do that, and there's nothing wrong with that- it's just not my way.  Of course many of those forums have bigger budgets than we do.... :D

Thanks to anyone who has supported the forum, thanks to those who will, and thanks to those who haven't, but still show up!

Hey Def,

Glad you put into the discussion. Any way could you please ask those guys to look into the software upgrades. I love this site but browsering from my blackberry stinks. I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks

Thanks mate, I just realized I´m not a charter member anymore. Maybe an automatic mail to inform you when the membership expires would be helpfull?

Membership refreshed. Thanks for this forum mates!

Styles?  What Styles?  You mean the limited number of Multitool.org Style CS's that were all gobbled up by Charter Members who get advance notice of such things and as a result won't be available to regular members?     No, I think mentioning that here would just be a tease, so we should probably not mention anything about them in the open forum..... but you probably could mention something about the limited number of Multitool.org Monarch flashlights that are left over and should be headed to the Multitool.org store on EDCSource.com since folks may still have a shot at them!  :D
