I need a camping knife...

Since you guys collectively know FAR more than I do, I figured I would throw this question around. I need a nice fixed blade knife for general camp chores, not a Rambo chopper or anything just something for a little wood splitting, brush clearing, food prep, carving, etc. I've been looking around online and theres some nice stuff out there but I'm trying to keep it around (or under) $40, so far the most promising knives I've seen are the Gerber Gator, Mora 2000, SOG Field Pup....Some nice Ka-Bars but those are pushing the budget. What would you guys suggest for a good quality, low(ish) cost knife with a blade somewhere between 4 and 7 inches?

How about a Cold Steel Bushman for that money
And with the change, get a nice hatchet
Give in, buy several Farmer's!!!!!!

A Cold Steel Bushman is a perfect choice for camping. It's super affordable and gets the job done.
This is called a Swiss Army Knife. Do you know what Switzerland is? Switzerland is a place where they don't like to fight, so they get people to do their fighting for them while they ski and eat chocolate. - Larry David

Check out the Ontario Spec-Plus line of knives. Just what you're looking for I think.

Get yourself a Mora.
and they usually cost under $20.
Great knife and made out of fantastic steel. Moras come in either laminate carbon steel or 12C27 stainless steel. And the Scandinavian grind makes sharpening very easy.

The Moras are excellent knives for the money as is the Cold Steel Bushman. I also like the CS Canadian belt knife. These are three I have experience with but there are many others that are equally good or better. Shop around. That is part of the fun. Good luck.

CS bushman is very low in hardness so they can be tough enough to to use as spear (HRC 52ish) and will dull quickly, not recommended. Mora on the other hand are properly hardened for knives and is around 58~60.
I'd pick either Mora 2k or SOG field pup depends on which you like better. Keep in mind the field pup has a bit of recurve so cannot be easily sharpened on a flat stone.
If you can go a bit higher the SOG NW ranger 2.0 is also nice.

Thanks for the help guys!
Every knife suggested here makes me want to spend some money, but in the end eBay got to me and I picked up a Gerber Freeman for just under $30 shipped. I'll post some pics here in a minute.
