I copied and saved this quote from somewhere years ago, don't know where from
But it makes sense, and it seems to me that its made from good steel, on par with Sheffield  :tu:

Quote

The "Made in Germany" mark started after 1887, in response to British legislation, and continued at least until the USA entered the war in 1941. In the interwar years many German made goods were exported to Britain marked "Foreign" to counter anti-German feeling resulting from WW1.

Steve  :salute:

So I thought I would give my oily metal tool cleaning procedure incase someone finds it useful

This it the first thing I do before going to harsher solvents
I put the tool in a container with a good amount of Washing powder (the stuff that goes in the clothes washing machine) and boiling water, then let it soak for an hour or two
Poke it about a bit with a brush now and then
Then I clean the parts off with dish soap if they are clean enough
or attack them with cream clenser (we used to call it Jiff here)
Once this is done if no more cleaning is required dry the bits off, you will get flash rusting if you are not careful

Give it a try it smells less than getting the petrol out  ;)

(Image removed from quote.)

The KD ratchet is neat.  You don't see many of those on this side of the pond.  I have a half dozen 12 inch adjustables, but I wouldn't have passed that one up.  Eclipse makes the best saws and gadgets.  The pin vise is neat!

My questions today are about the big vise and the other chunk of rusty metal. What size and maker on the big vise?  What is that other item with the chain? Also, another Mole grip? Finally, the handles in the lower left corner.  Any history on them?

So the easy questions first, yes another pair of mole grips, I'm keeping this pair
The handles fit (some of?) our man hole covers here in the UK, easier/safer than jamming in two big screwdrivers

The vice I've not looked at yet but I'm glad you are here Yadda to ask about the other rusty thing!  :salute:
It's an old Record 181 chain vice

Very much like this one...

I was thinking mallet. Knife scales would be absolutely lovely, but you'd go mad trying to make them... you'd end up topping yourself!  :ahhh

From what I've heard, it's quite labour intensive to shape. I'm working with a chippy next week who's used it - I'll ask him for some pointers.  :tu:

Nice haul Tony  :tu:

We used to use lignum vitae in our liquid slip regulator tanks at work for crash plugs to stop the plates coming totally together.  They were permanently submerged in a soda crystal and water solution that was always hot as a result of the current passed through the electrodes.  I can't remember ever having to change any, they just lasted forever.

Looks like it should be easy enough to cut if you go slow and seeing as it's self lubricating. I wonder how well it'll take things like linseed oil

Might come in handy your linseed oil and white spirit mix to soak in easier
