I have been playing with these chisels  :D

I decided to try something different from the wire brush this time, they went straight in to the vinegar (not the handles   ;) )

Cleaned the black off with a rag then a green scourer,
Started to polish the top one with some brass polish and rubbed down with linseed oil

What I thought was a 'Marples' is actually a 'Jewson's chisel  :o
(I went a bit wrong with the Primary grind on this one  :-[ )

Just need polish the other two and sharpen  :D

I'm really glad I bought the 'Footprint' chisels now (I nearly didn't bother as they were so tatty)

Thanks Guys
I think vinegar is the way to go, no dust, no noise of the wire wheel, no ouch my eye  :ahhh
Just pop them in a jar of cheap vinegar overnight, wash the black stuff off in the kitchen sink in the morning an Bobs your uncle  :D

The only thing to remember is they have this gray patina instead of a shiny finish
If my spork polisher had not died I think I would see what they looked like after a good polish

PS, If you do buy rusty wood chisels, pitting on the front or cutting edge is fine as we can sharpen it out but pitting on the back pretty much ruins the chisel (or makes a huge amount of work)  :salute:

I'm renaming you Tony de Oxide, the Rust Master TM.  Has a ring to it don't you think :P

Nice haul gents.

I did three boot sales this last weekend. Keeps me fit ;)

Spotted a Victorinox Hunter but the guy wanted too much for it. Didn't buy an pretty cool axe head that I'm now regretting walking away from ::)

Got a pile of old broken mobiles for a couple of quid that I'm now playing gut swaps with to get a few working.  I bought the boys an old Intel microscope but its around a decade old and the drivers are a joke.  Its a neat bit of hardware for kids though, so I'll probably gut the electronics and replace them with the board from a modern web cam.

Oh and I found a Vic. Ensign :D

I'm not taking any more mod orders at present, sorry.

Sound like you've been busy Mate  :tu:
There's a big one here at the weekend, I'm collecting all my change together  :D

By the way

If anyone coming to the meet finds a small ( 3 or 4inch no bigger ) engineers square I would be very grateful

I decided I really need one it will help with my chisel sharpening
  ::)
