Should have taken a Swisstool instead
on: August 20, 2007, 08:49:10 PM
I dont mean to rub it in and the guys from Leatherman must hate me by now  :(  but i saw this on bladeforums from a guy with a LM Wave ......

http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=493754

He says it was in fresh water for 30 mins and then inspected 8 hours later .

Heres a pic of a swisstool that was submerged in sea water and left 24 hours before cleaning , no rust what so ever .

Didnt have the heart to post it in the Leatherman forum  >:D

I'm always amazed how my Victorinox knives/multitools over the years have never shown any corrosion.  I guess that kind of torture testing shows why.   :)

I see you have a few nice pits there Dunc!  Looks like you weren't completely unscathed!

No hatred here  :) But... there's nothing here to rub in my face. These tools can rust. That's part of the game, and it doesn't bother me any more than slippy polished screwdrivers bother you  ;) That being said, Vic's seemingly rustproof qualities are very neat!

Def those arent pits , but bits of sand and tiny bits of sea weed and what ever else is floating in the sea  :o When I get home tonight I will take a pic of same tool several months later . Even I'm not sure what state its in as its on the boat . Guess I'm going to have to put my money where my mouth is  :o

You know... I prefer my Multi's to rust... it gives me an excuse to buy a new one.

"Look honey, this ones so old it's rusting!  I really need to get a new one!"  :)

First off I'll deal with the slippy screwdriver later  :(

Ok lets get on with the pics I took a little while ago of the Swisstool RS that lives on the lifeboat . The pic I posted earlier was taken 24 hours after it was used and submerged in sea water while 7.5 miles out to sea ( if any ones remotely interested I can give a lat long ) . This was some time ago and was washed and dryed after 24hours . It has been used a good few times since but cant say if its been in sea water or not because I'm not always on the boat when it goes out .

Now I suppose I had better say a few words about the so called "slippy screwdrivers " .Believe it or not I dont look at the swisstool through rose tinted glasses and I do agree it does have a number of faults . The blades are sods to get out unless your fingernails are on steriods and yes the phillips is a bit slippy and if care isnt taken when using it you can round the head off .I dont find any problem at all with the flat screwdrivers though . Its not a problem for me as I dont really use a phillips that much any way , but if you push down and take care its not a problem .If your faced with lots of screws then the nice people at Victorinox make one of these

That tool is a great addition to the ST,  I have the CS Plus package, major weight on your hip but you can't beat the added usefullness. I have taken appart more stuff with this combo than any other tool.

Yeah, those are pretty neat, and a good addition to any MT. Personally though, I don't usuallly like to have to bring any extras along, and that includes LM's bit adapters, holders, and sheaths. If I end up really needing a good screwdriver, I'll just bring a dedicated one. One of my favorites is a 1/4 hex bit, ratcheting one with a hollow handle for extra bits. It works great except when you need to fit in a really slim recess where you need a dedicated driver.

How did you get the lanyard on?

I use little fishing swivels , the ones that undo like safety pins .

It's a dedicated corkscrew attachment point that doubles as a lanyard hole :D

Yes it also doubles as the cork screw attachment but it is named as a lanyard hole in the user guide .
