Amici,
As I had earlier posted in the LM tools forum, I recently purchased a Maxpedition sheath to carry my full sized MTs (Surge, 300, STX) since the sheaths that come standard which each I feel are pretty lacking.
So this weekend I decided that I would do a little R&D and use this sheath to carry my Swisstool X and see what the results would be since some folks just don't like to carry heavy MT's on their belts for any length of time..
Scenario would be a 5 hour hike along the cliffs of the Hudson River in New York. My main gear would be a Camelbak Trailblazer daypack with an upgraded 3 liter omega reservoir, and as part of my pre hike prep before heading out, I strapped the Maxpedition sheath with Swisstool X onto my belt.
Before I even started the hike, I noticed since I don't wear a shirt tucked in, that if I wore the sheath in the horizontal position anywhere on a 2" web belt, that the sheath was starting to rub into my side so I almost was going to abort the mission before it had even began.
The quick solution was to try wearing it in the vertical position and it wore perfectly. There was no longer any rubbing, and better yet, no feeling of carrying a big piece of steel on my belt either.. It was easily accessible any time I need my MT from opening some cans of foodstuffs, fixing a stuck zipper, cutting some moleskin for some beat up feet, and whittling a quick hiking staff for one of my companions who encountered some fatigue issues on the ascent.
The velcro straps of the sheath made it so much easier to redepoly the sheath in different positions without having to stop remove all of my other gear and also to undo my belt. The unique strapping system also allows it to be used in a military role as well as a civilian one. This feature enables you to strap the sheath to one of your packs harness straps if that's your preferred method of carry.
From then on I went through the 5 hours of climbing and descending along the cliffs with no issues from either the sheath or the weight of the Swisstool X.
The next hike I will be participating in I will definitely be carrying a full sized MT just as long as I have a Maxpedition sheath strapped somewhere on my belt..
Cheers,
Serge
