Multi tools, nice yet frustrating
on: July 07, 2010, 07:45:53 PM
Hello everyone.  Multis are so nice and yet fristrating at the same time.  My 22 month old daughter was given a battery operated toy car that makes sounds.  Well the AA bayyeries had been left in it and you know the rest of the story.  So here is dad with his trusty multi tool to take it apart and see if he can replace the battery holder in it.  Guess what, my SOG Powerlock's philpis driver was too short, ok so on to the Wave with bit kit....well it was to thick to get in the tight spaces.  I ended up having to use a (sigh) regular screwdriver.  It was just one of those times where a multi just could not do the job.  It was somewhat of a bummer because there was my wife and mother and "the multi tool guy" who had to use a kitchen screwdriver.  DOH.  :)  Oh well what matters is that her toy can be fixed if I can find another battery holder to put in it and also rechargeables  so this can not happen again.

Yeah, reach isn't exactly a strong point for most multis  :-\

Maybe a Vic Cybertool would have fit? :D

Maybe you should get one anyway, just in case  :pok:

I did think of cutting the molded in plastic battery holder out and then getting one from Radio Shack and hot glue the thing in.  LOL  But that requires sodering and I can not see well enough to do that.  :(

I have the bit kit and extension for the Leatherman Wave but the shaft of the tool was too large for the recessed hole the screw was in.  Sure I will take that Cybertool you are offering me.  LOL  :)

I tried to buy a Core NIB on clearance for $38 but so far I have not heard back from the tacticle shop, it is probably gone by now.  :(  There was not enough room for a bulky tool like a multi tool to get in there, so unless you had 6 inches or so of reach to get to the screw your only choice was a screwdriver.  LOL  :)

The cybertool may or may not have worked, but thats why I can carry a little precision screwdriver set in my car.  It has a T6-T10 torx, a small flat head, and tiny phillips.  All the bits store in the handle and I keep on my glovebox, and one in Liam's Tactical Diaper Bag.  Home Depot carries it for I think 5.49.  Very handy bit of kit.

Hmm, that actually solves a problem I'm having at the moment; off to Home Depot before long, I guess, then. XD

You'll have to buy two then, forgot to mention that.  They come in two flavors.  Torx, and phillips/flathead.  I had to mix and match to get what I needed out of them.

I'll keep my eyes open; for me, at least though, I only need one since I need to tighten a pivot screw on a knife, assuming my CT41 doesn't have the correct bit. :)

Then you'll just need the one.  Shame we don't have a trade going on or I would send you one over still NIB.

I wasn't sending him the cybertool just the home depot precision drivers.  If you want some torx bits I can send you some.

I grabbed the Huskey torx driver, and took it out of the packaging; of course, when I walk into Best Buy, I see some of their in-store(?) brand of screwdrivers costing $9 and $12 with longer reach and more bit options.  Turns out I may yet still need another, so I may go with the Best Buy option; just depends, though. :)

Honestly I was joking about the Cybertool, but sure I will take some bits if you are offering.  :)  Thank you for the offer.  :)

Yes you do.  Go with the CT34, it is not much more than the 29 and you get scissors and pliers with it.  Well worth it.
