More Skeletool & K500L Info
on: August 26, 2007, 09:38:20 PM
Hi Gang,

Take a long at this.  There are reasonable pictures of both.  The K500L and K501L are supposed to be available in September.

Good find!
$72 (or $96) does seem quite a bit of money but it does look pretty nice!

Thanks for the tip Joe!

As regards the K500L, it must be that Leatherman and Buck engineers were working in parallel universes on this knife-tool-with-an-onboard-light concept. At least the light is removable on the Leatherman.

I wish I could know who's making the light for the K500L/K501L. I'm also wondering if there'll be follow on models, with other features, like drivers, etc.

That light/knife combo is pretty neat, but IMO, it would make more sense on a MT. I carry a MT to kinda be prepared for lots of situations, but if I'm in a situation where I want a dedicated knife, I'll probably want a dedicated flashlight as well.

Am I right in thinking I am not the only one who thinks 72 dollars is an absurdly high price for the skeletool?

$72 manufacturer's suggested retail price (MSRP) might translate into what, fifty dollars or so street price?

That's what I am hoping.  $45-50 would be the max I would want to pay for a minimalist multi.  Paying more for less would hurt LM in the long run I think.

Hello All,

I tried to get delivery info on the K500/501L tools with lights from one of my suppliers.  They answered yesterday saying that the September delivery date was postponed without any estimate of when we'll see these.

Last night, I emailed my contact at Leatherman and today received the following:

"Hi Joe,

Yes, this is the case. The K500L/K501L knife with light has been put on hold.  I'm sorry , but I don't have any update on when it might be coming out..  The Genus (I asked about pictures) will be out in mid-October and you should be able to visit our web site by the beginning of October to see more pictures."

I'll let you all know as soon as I get more info.

Best - Joe

No pictures of the Genus yet.  Leatherman marketing says October for both the pictures and the pruner.

The Genus is a new pruner tool they are bringing out later this year. It was announced in a newsletter from Leatherman a couple months back. Here is what they had to say at that time:

Genus - The Professional's Pruner (and multi-tool)
Take everything you know about professional pruners and turn it on its head. Or in the case of Genus™…Rotate it. These new pruners feature an industry-first: A rotating handle that stores a full set of professional tools. Just push the button and flip the handle around and you'll find a knife, Phillips screwdriver, sprinkler head adjustment tool/flat screwdriver, bottle opener and very aggressive saw. Included with this professional-grade pruning tool is a diamond-coated file that doubles as an open-end wrench to adjust the pruner nut when necessary.

Hi Tango44,

I suggest that you go to the Leatherman site and sign up for their newsletter.  You'll find info on that in the section called Leatherman World.
