That's why I need a... Farmer!
on: July 12, 2010, 07:58:21 PM
I spend the weekend (a very hot weekend with temperatures over 30° C) in our garden. We don't live there during the week, so it is always a lot to do when we arrive. It is really beautiful, but sometimes I hate it because it is sooo much work. Yesterday we had the first potatoes with fresh peas and carrots for dinner. That's what I love

Raspberries and other berries:

Our small greenhouse...

... with mostly tomatoes...

... and peppers

Outside we have peas, beans, carrots, onions, potatoes.

Fresh peas, I love to eat them directly outside in the garden  :D

Another view

Here we have more peas, carrots and onions, beetroot and several sorts of cabbage

Some beautiful flowers, I couldn't find the english name for it (we call them "Stockrose")

Here we have leek, more cabbage, small box trees, some flowers and a part that is unused this year to recover the soil

In a garden you need insects, and we give them a home

A part where you could relax if you had the time for it  :ahhh, with old fruit trees

Beautiful roses

This will keep us warm next winter  :D

You see, I definitively need a Farmer  :tu:

Yes, it helps a bit. We had problems with deer and bunnys, and then we set up the fence. Of course it doesn't help with snails and mice, which still are a big problem. We could use poison, but we keep all chemistry out of the garden. In the end, you eat it.  :ahhh
With snails, we collect them in the evening when they come out and kill them (only the "naked" ones). I hate to do that, but if you see how numerous they are and how much a single snail can eat, it feels a little bit better. It's a shame that you can't eat these snails
For the mice, we just have a pole for birds of prey (sometimes a falcon sits there), and cats from the neighbourhood come along. I would love to have a cat, too, but if you can't care for it during the week you shouldn't get one.

Thats a great looking garden there TS! Gardens are a lot of hard work. Enjoying the fruit of your labor makes it worth it. I agree you need your Farmer.  :tu:   But then again I think everyone should have at least one Farmer.
What? Enablers! Are you serrrrious? Where? I dont see any.

I think the top squares are for mason bees, but Can you explain what British insects need bricks?     ;)

Sorry for the late answer, again a weekend in the garden, pulling out weeds  :twak:

@Neil, if you are close, just drop me a note and sure you can have a cup of tea! But bring water, the tap water there is terrible hard and I haven't found a tea that tastes good yet. As I am there only at weekends a water filter is no option, and I switch to drinking coffe there as tea just tastes and looks terrible  :ahhh
And yes, I guess I need a Harvester, too  :gimme:

@BlueDot: I have no idea who should live in that part with the bricks. I think there are some usefull insects that live in clay and the bricks are just there make it look nicer and to keep the clay in place  At least no British insects, as we live in Germany.  :D

Here in the US, large Carpenter Bees will nest in holes that size (usually they bore into softer wood to make a similarly sized hole).

Sorry, My oversight.
I had a chance to visit Germany in 1981, while in the Navy.  Beautiful country!
