looking for a hawkbill
on: July 21, 2010, 07:20:59 PM
hi everyone, I'm looking for a quality hawkbill  ::) for general use, it doesn't have to tactical or one handed but needs to be quality, It might be used on food, so stainless is preferred, but I'm not against , a folder is preferable, but not entirely against a fixed blade, it should be between 3 and 5 inches plain edged, so I've found the spyderco, and opinel versions, just curious if anyone knows of anything else out there  ???

Victorinox makes a pruning knife that's hawkbilled, so does quite a few other pruning knives.

Bought a Byrd Hawkbill a year or so ago.  Amazing cutter.

I can highly recommend the Vic Pruner blade if that suits your needs. It's solid, has a great backspring and is high quality stainless steel :)

Neil might still have one for sale somewhere.... not sure.

What will you be using it for?

a little of everything, boxes, rope, possibly cooking, for me they seem to work better than other blade styles,

I'd say a pruner style blade might work better for you than a hawkbill, then.  Hawkbill blades are really purpose-built blades for draw cuts and poor for general utility use.

The Case knives that 2xTap just posted would probably work pretty good.  Otherwise, something like a Byrd Crossbill might be good as well - it has a Hawkbill blade but it's not as extreme in curvature as the Spyderco Hawkbills (which are mostly meant for marine use).  They can also be had pretty cheap

Or if you really didn't mind dropping some coin the Superhawk's been discontinued and should be on clearance.
