Recent Scout knife addition!
on: July 25, 2010, 03:06:56 AM

Been a little while since I've eyed any Scout Knives but came across a few auctions recently on some older stock NIB Weidmannsheil pieces and managed to win one of them. A few years back I picked up a few of these Weidmannsheil Scouts, as well as one of the Bulldog Brand versions, and was quite taken with them due to their quality construction. My latest is no exception.

It's a 2007 Weidmannsheil Scout Knife manufactured by Friedrich Olbertz over in Germany. The same maker of the German Bulldog Brand knives as well as Fight'n Rooster and the Carl Schlieper's.

It's done on a more traditional Scout pattern frame that sits in at 3 5/8" closed. Equal end style but without a bail. Bolsters and shield are nickle/silver, the pins & liners are brass, and the blade & tools are carbon steel. Many of you know I dislike carbon steel in my slippies, but with these they only come one way.....and that's in carbon steel. The scales are done in Woodland Jigged Blue Bone. These were short run pieces with only 50 made.

Fit and Finish is near perfect. Zero blade play throughout, backsprings are stout and sit flush with blades opened or closed, the knife has a flawless mirror polish throughout, all blades have matchstrikers, and the overall fit is nearly gap free. There is one small hairline gap between the Awls backspring and the backspring spacer, up on the bolster end not quite a 1/4" in length. real faint and ain't hurting nothing.

Outside of that it's a excellent piece and goes well with my other three of the same build......

......now if they would just make these in stainless!  :D

Now that really is a "me" knife

I quite like the idea of them being carbon steel, as it'd make a nice change from carrying stainless all the time :)

I don't suppose they do one with a saw blade and a bail/lanyard hole do they?

I really want one of those camillus or imperial scout knives that have the phillips head in there too! It's like the traditional equivalent of a SAK. Very nice indeed.

Mike,

Unfortunately no they didn't. But they do make a slightly bigger 6-blade version in both the Weidmannsheil and Bulldog lines. I picked up one of these a while back in Buffalo Horn from Bulldog........

......these add to the others a small secondary Clip blade and a corkscrew on a slightly wider frame. The Weidmannsheil versions of this pattern also have a Damascus mainblade. I am actually eyeing a auction on one of those as I type this!  ;)

David,

I snatched up one of those back just before Camillus went under a few years back when they could still be had at a good price......

......in my Scout Knife collection this Deluxe version is one of my favorites.

Camillus, over their long run, had made many a version of their Scout pattern under numerous brand names. This is just one. And they are getting harder to find although they do pop up here or there.

Well, since getting that Weidmannsheil Scout I've tried to get a few more to add to the collection. So far I have lost out on three auctions....two were Weidmannsheils and one was a another Bulldog. Can't seem to catch a break this time.

Anywho, I got fed up and decided to hunt for some directly on sale sans auction. And stumbled on a good price for one of these instead...........

Remington 2009 BSA Scout Knife:

Got a good deal on it and should have it here in a few days.  :2tu:

'Tap, you're the man!   :salute: :tu: :salute:

Beautiful knives!

I had my two Case Scouts (a 70's vintage full-size, and a current Scout in red synth handles) out, but didn't bring either with me back to work.  (Though I did the new RussLock!  >:D)  Great knives, and often overlooked.

Congrats!

('Course, now I'm going to have to look up those Weidmannsheils!)
