Been overwhelmed by academia related stuff these past months. A couple more weeks before I can breathe again... sooo...

Just ordered an Electrician and a Walker for mod fodder.  :) I am Keen to Peen once again.

Upcoming (mostly 84mm) mod projects:
  • Electrician Duo (electrician solo with caplifter in a single layer) => From a 93mm electrician
  • Red alox Lumberjack => From Cadet + Walker parts
  • Red alox Bantam => From a Cadet + small spare combo tool
  • Apprentice => From a nylon scaled Apprentice + spare backspring phillips
  • SportsTinker => From a Tinker Small + spare nail file from a Cadet

Between the post office and a local gun show, a very productive day:

Remington Jumbo Trapper with curly maple handles. 30th Anniversary Bullet Knife.

Old Western Stockman, made just up the road in Longmont, Colorado.

Victorinox Explorer White Christmas 2017.

While browsing a local auction site a fluted corkscrew caught my eye.
I never liked those. When I picked my first SAK as a kid I had a choice between a fluted and a non-fluted corkscrew. I chose the latter and since the fluted were phased out at that point I never gave it any thought.
Now that I've met you lot here at MT I see the beauty of the fluted corkscrew.

Anyway, the fluted corkscrew caught my eye. It seemed to be a champion, but I wasn't sure. The pictures weren't that great. I decided to buy it anyway.
I did some reading and the Champion comes in three types a/b and c. I was guessing I got a c. The SwissChamp evolved from the Champion, so that's what I expected to get.

Victorinox Champion c

But when the Champion arrived today it was nothing like a SwissChamp. It felt more familliar, almost like... my Handyman. I did some more reading and it turned out that the SwissChamp was the new flagship model, and the Handyman flowed from the Champion with a few changes. Very interesting!

The Champion I got is indeed a Champion c. I did some research and can date the SAK to 1977-1985. It has seen some serious use. The woodsaw was bent and has scarred the liner. The screwdrivers are bent, the keyring attachment is bent. The liners are damaged at the bottom, as if someone has used it as a hammer. (I recognise this damage from my first Handyman which I had used as a hammer in an emergency). The scales are scratched up, but considering the rest i pretty decent shape.

Setting the temperature for the Bacta treatment

After a good brush and a few minutes in the Bacta tank the Champion was ready for a proper oil job. All the tools have a very nice action and snap closed like a new SAK. It took some effort to bend the woodsaw back in place and I still need to straighten the screwdriver and the keyring eye.

Bacta tank Champion

I made a few interesting observations:
- The magnifier has a sharp ring.
- The lettering on the fishscaler is different than my fathers SwissChamp.

All in all I'm totally digging my Champion. It feels incredibly familiar to my Handyman. I might do a comparison. I'm in doubt on what to do with this SAK. I planned to change to plus scales and perhaps change the colour to green or blue.
But I like the used look so I;m not sure what to do yet.

Are those aluminum tipped tweezers on there too? If so, then you can date it pre 78. but I think they started making them like this one in 75. As far as I know before 75, the fish scalers were blank. I've got one pretty much exactly like that new in the box. it's special to me.

Thought I was buying a Pocket Tool Chest

It was super cheap and does give me my first sense of what a 65mm Wenger feels like and how the serrated scissors work. I'm not a big scissors user but I do kind of like them :tu:

Unfortunately, no. The T&T were missing. I've been doing research until late in the night to find another means of dating it more closely and filled an entire page with tools and dates.
The last thing I can think of is the shield on the front. It's either stainless steel or nickelsilver. I can imagine there being a slight difference in colour. However,
I can't tell if these are the original scales and have no nickelsilver to compare them to.
For now, I'll assume they are SS and I can say the knife is '80-'85.

Very cool Pocket Tech! The Wenger 65mm screwdriver set is more usefull and covers more screws then the Vic 58mm line.
Jeep the SAK of the auto world or is it SAK the Jeep of the Knife world?
