Ohhh, I'm too exited not to post just yet! But I have two incoming!
The photo's were pretty bad but I believe one to be an early model of the SwissCard.
Not that special, but a SwissCard has been on my watchlist for so long that's I'm quite excited to have one heading my way.

Ans second a Wenger. I have trouble determinating it. And since the add is gone now I can't look at the photo any more (should have made a screenshot *_*)
From what I can remember: Large blade, can opener, bottle opener, scissors, fish scaler, orienteering tool, magnifier, corkscrew, awl and a wrench (the fixed type). I'm under the assumption that the logo is a metal inlay.

I took a closer look at the orienteering tool in general and if I'm correct it's the first model.

For now, the waiting game has begun...

Just checked the tracking code and the mystery Wenger was delivered today!
Unfortunately I'm still in a hotel on the other side of the country for work.

The SwissCard is supposed to be shipped today. Sadly no tracking code. But if shipment goes smoothly it will arrive tomorrow.
Fortunately I'm driving back home tomorrow  :D

It's always nice to have something to come home to. Like a Wenger and a Victorinox.
Oh yeah, and the dog and the girlfriend

So I got home yesterday and I was welcomed by a nice hefty package on the doormat (and my dog, and my girlfriend).
Inside was the Wenger I bought on an impulse. It turned out to be very interesting.

But let's start with the sellers photo, advertised as: Victorinox 13 functions.

It's hard to tell a lot form this photo alone. (This one I dug up out of my cache, resized it and cleaned it up). But it has a compas and a magnifier so that was reason enough to pull the trigger on this one.

What arrived was a bone dry SAK. Movement was very gritty, there were little stones and sand in the SAK.
And I don't like sand. It's coarse and irritating and it get's everywhere.
There was no snap in any of the tools and opening them nearly cost me some nails.

So today I tried to clean it. It took five cycles in the sonic bath to get clean water. And there is still muck in there. So I'll have some more cleaning to do.

Wenger Bacta Treatment

After a dry and a quick oil treatment the snap was back and opening was so much easier.
This is what I got:

Mystery Wenger

Mystery Wenger: front scale, back tool layer and back scale with engraving

I like used SAKs. I like to patch them up, sharpen them and give them a second life either on display or in use. With this one it's even more evident it has had a previous owner because the back scale has an engraving. Makes me wonder where this SAK has been because I did not buy it from Gerald.

So, what model is it and how old it it? It's got me puzzled. I'm not used to dating Wenger so I look for the obvious. The tang stamp is used from 1966-2008. That's just accurate enough to know it is made at some point in time. The logo on the front scale perhaps? 1975-2008? Then let's take a closer look at the tools, the orienteering tool got me to buy it because I've never seen a metal one before. That hunch was correct. It's a 1st generation orienteering tool which was introduced (according to SakWiki) in 1985-86 and succeed by a 2nd generation in 1986. So now we have a date. One other thing that springs to mind is the absence of the chain. There is no (and has not been) an attachment point.

Wenger 1st generation orienteering tool and aluminium compass

And then there is the fishscaler. This one does not have a line guide. So it's an older model.

Wenger fish scaler

Wenger metal file and woodsaw

Wenger scissors

Wenger universal wrench

The complete toolset:
Front layer: Large blade, Nail file, Philips screwdriver, Universal wrench, Scissors, Woodsaw, Metal file/saw, Fishscaler, Magnifier /w Small screwdriver, Orienteering tool, Bottle opener, Can opener.
Back layer:Awl (no sewing eye), Corkscrew.
Scale tools:Toothpick, Tweezers

Now we have a date we can look up some catalogs. Sadly, No 1985 and 1986 catalogs are available to me. I do know it does not show up in the 1982 catalog.
The Matterhorn (16927) resembles it most. Except it has a keychain and no Orienteering Tool.
And then, in the 1990 catalog, I find the answer. It's a Matterhorn Plus. However, in 1990 the orienteering tool has changed to the 2nd gen and there is a keychain. Perhaps they could be ordered without a keychain?

So the mystery is solved. The Mystery Wenger is a Matterhorn Plus from around 1985.

I added a Mountaineer to my collection it is in route.
Seller said, never used.  Sure seems like it's been carried though since it has a chain on it.  I'm now thinking there are distinctions between:

Yes, there seems to be a margin of never usedness.

I once bought a boardgame, only used once. It was dirty and incomplete. When I contacted the seller they said it was complete and that she had trouble parting with it because it was their family favourite. -Used once...

Same story with a SAK I once bought. Some scratches on the blade are synonymous to thrown under a passing train and hit with a hammer.

Oh how often I got broken tools, burnt scales and missing scale tools in badly pictured and poorly described auctions... It's a sport in and of itself I think...

Anyways... Got a few more beauties in the last few days...

Victorinox:
Classic in gold Alox with Piaget ad. (I've actually had this for years... This may even have been my first classic as I found it deep within a box in my salvaged coin collection)
Secretary in teal Alox with elgasonic ad.
Pioneer Rancher with OC red scales. Pruner blade tip snapped... Will need a trip to the spa.
1979 Soldier in very good condition
2009 Soldier in very good condition too... Even came with the pouch.

Wenger:
Esquire in red with Binningen written on the back scale along with the crest of the municipality (just outside Basel)
Esquire in royal blue with a "fraisa" logo on the back scale
Unknown 76mm "fat-victorinox-accountant-like" with stainless steel scales and Wengerinox tang-stamp. The big blade has an ad engraved on it that says "Acier Firth S.-A. De Vente - Zurich".
Unknown 82mm Tahara with yellowish scales that look a bit like fake mother of pearl with some shiny parts inside. Has just a small blade and a big blade
Antique 82mm Tahara Viking-like. Relatively good shape except for the small blade tip that is bent.
3 Patriots, 1 green, 1 red and 1 dark red.
1983 Soldier in great shape except for a doubly bent blade tip... Not sure if I should entrust it to the Vic spa to see what they can do with the blade... What do you guys (and gals) think?

That would depend if Vic would spend any time straightening it, more likely they will either grind it or replace it, if they replace it will they stamp it? might be worth asking first
