A Tale of Two Pouches . . .
It was the best of tools and it was the worst of tools, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity . . . wrong novel,

A number of days ago I received a pouch for my SwissTool X Plus Ratchet (and then some). The inside looked like this with the pocket for the SwissTool behind the space for the bit holder, wrenches, etc.

It turns out there are not one, but two nylon pouches for the SwissTool Plus [Ratchet]. This one is the older, discontinued pouch. The discontinued pouch has the shorter flap. Below it, with the longer flap, is the pouch that replaced it.

Opened up, one can see that the SwissTool goes in the reinforced pocket in front in the new pouch, with the bits and wrenches behind it. Two loops to hold the ratchet extension and corkscrew. The SwissTool goes in the reinforced pocket in the rear in the old one with the bit holder in front of it. Has no loops for the ratchet extension or corkscrew.

The discontinued pouch is slightly narrower in how its made with the sides sewn to the one-piece front, bottom and back with flap. As a result, it stands more proud from the belt compared to the new one which allows room to spread wider to reduce its thickness some.

Those with good eyes may have already noted this, which I discovered when examining the new one. Both pouches have the same reference number stamped in them (aka part number): 4.0833.N, with the "N" indicating it's the nylon pouch. I believe the leather one is the same number with a trailing "L" to indicate leather.

I would have expected Victorinox to change the part number for the pouch if the design were significantly changed as that would be proper configuration management to differentiate between them. I'm at a loss to think of any reasons for not doing so beyond not doing to the work necessary to do it. 'Tis a far better rest the SwissTool, bits and wrenches go to in the new design than the old.

Thus ends John's A Tale of Two Pouches

Mail call yesterday!
I found this Hercules on an auction site with a very small pricetag and could not pass it up.

Victorinox Hercules

Just like Hercules it has been through 12 labours, there is some wear and tear.
I didn't have time to give it a full bacta treatment, but the hinges were a bit rough so I ran them under the tap (opening and closing them) to get rid of most of the gunk.
Then I oiled all the hinges to soften the gunk further. Perhaps today I will give it a full treatment.

What surprised me are the scissors and pliers. They are the same size as on the 91mm SAKs. I really did not expect that.
The tools underneath (philips screwdrivers) are interesting. I like the long small philips. But they both have a rather awkward opening movement and the large philips interferes with the keyring. Very interesting.
I don't have an idea on the age of this SAK yet. I do believe it's an earlier model because there is an old microscrewdriver in the corkscrew and I believe modern slide-lock SAKs have a 90° stop. But I'm not sure.

I'm at work now so it's the perfect time to do some research!

The Hercules has a great tool set. Getting to a few has a learning curve, as with the WorkChamp, but found it's not so bad after a few times.

Among several packages, this Tourist arrived. Had never looked at the 84mm scales before. Has hole for straight pin behind the corkscrew, just like the 91mm. Fits right in with the Sportsman and Small Tinker. The 84mm are small enough to fit into a nice slip and slide into the pocket easily.

This Wenger also arrived . . . in a Victorinox package! My conclusion: made at the tail end of Wenger logo usage as Victorinox was converting the Evolution line to new liners, and Victorinox scales, can openers, awls, and T&T. Wanted an Evo 16 for a while and the price on the EvoGrip was very good.

Nicely done! The Zermatt are very different. The several I've had are quite robust. The first one lasted about three decades of frequent use.
