Bought this user condition 84mm that arrived today.  Thinking of sending it in for a freshen up, but have never done that before.

Nice knife! You can make scales shine by yourself easy.

I see you mention cleaning it up along with others.  Is there a specific product that helps make the scales shine or a method to use?
I've only used soapy water, but never any compound or product.

I worry I will buy the wrong kind and damage the scale.  Is there a recommended product that people use?

@ FB.  I've used wet dry sand paper to see if "deep" scratches can be removed.  Its effective but I would not try it on that SAK.  If you are looking to bring back some luster to those scales and smooth away some scuffs I'd strop it.  Its what I do on all my SAK when they need a refresh.

Here's what I did on my recent find 84mm Super Tinker/Salesman.  Soap and water clean SAK. Qtip clean inside with tools opened.  I leave scales on SAK and strop.  This wont bring scales back to their original condition but IMO it does make the SAK shine again.  I do the same with the blades and other tools.  You wont be able to reach every part on the blades and tools but the compound does shine them up nicely.

Hope you can see the difference on the minchamp after just a minute of stropping.   The compound came from a home store.

I’ve tried wet sanding a similar scale (on my only exposed rivet one) and it came out fine... used autosol afterwards...

I won't try it until I feel comfortable with the 84mm.  I will try it on some 58mm scales first.

I couldn't pass up on this one.

(Image removed from quote.)

It's not in the pristine condition as I thought it would be, but considering how most Amefa's look it's very nice.
It came with the leather case, it has a number written in it, possibly a soldiers number. But I can't find any info on the cases that were in service in 1984.
I think I'm going to put the nicest one on display and make this one a user.
There is something special about a birth year sak. Sometimes I would have liked it to be a Victorinox, but it's also kind a sweet that my birth year SAK is actually made in Holland.

Mactire, as far as I know there were NO military pouches back in 1984. The first came with the KL1993 model. I joined the Dutch Armed Forces from 1978-1980 and I never saw a pouch. The knives were mostly attached to the trouser belt loop with a green cord.

I used to use Polywatch but I'm out of stock.
Jeweler's rouge works too but I'm not able to get it to shine like a new one at the moment...

I have used Turtle Wax Polishing Compound Cleaner--Light to Medium.(it is a fine white polishing compound)

Put some on a cloth and rub it on the scale until it disappears.(don't just wipe on and wipe off...actually keep rubbing until it disappears)

I finish off with a car polish such as Nu-Finish,(this will bring back the shine)

It is a good idea to practice on an old one first to get the feel of it.

I am sure some of the other members may have some better suggestions.

Here's a pic of the etching.

Charles.
I got a few knives 2 days ago...

Victorinox Director... I was really happy to finally have a director with no advertising... Nothing on the scales... Nothing on the blade... Then I open the file and what's on the back? I the same thing as ChopperCharles' knife... "Cozzio Winterthur".
Quite funny to see this on the same day I got my knife with the same marking :D

Another one in the same package...
Victorinox Pioneer Rancher with a 00 stamp on the back of the blade.

Finally... Not as nice as my other 3 NiB professionals... But still pretty cool:
Wenger Profesional 1.72.31 with a 87 stamp. The scales have seen better days but it's not its fault and I like it just the way it is

Thanks for that!

It appears one of the two 1.71.11 is actually a 1.72.11 with the wrong box (or label)

Tang stamps are :
1.72.11 : 87
1.71.11 : 88
1.72.51 : 81
1.72.31 : 87

Anyways... This isn't the thread for that :D here's the mail I opened up today :

Wenger Standard 1.01.00 with a fluted corkscrew and a "sharpened" nailfile

Wenger Bike 36 - 1997 Tour de France - Étape Suisse : Fribourg (Swiss stage of the Tour de France in Fribourg) - New in pouch, if that's a thing :D

I've started collecting automotive-themed (and tool-themed) knives lately, for display in my garage. I just picked up this NIB Victorinox 2-layer "Truckstops of America". I've also got a Wenger 65mm "Valvoline", a Schrade DL-2 "Texaco" (which is absolutely gorgeous, with the transparent scales), and a little Chinese "Benchtop Tools" SD-sized knife. (If you remember, BenchTop was the K-mart tool brand. They were very close to Craftsman in quality. My first set of tools was a BenchTop set, given for me for my 18th birthday. With the exception of the pesky 8mm and 13mm sockets, which disappeared somewhere, I still have every one of those tools). There's a slick Snap-On on eBay right now that I'd love... but I don't actually own any snap-on tools. So it seems disingenuous somehow :D

Truckstops of America? I remember seeing those as a kid. Vaguely, but still, they were around.

Charles.
