I just got this one. I think it is the black beauty listed as a variant of the soldier on sakwiki. This is my first alox and I must say I am really enjoying it so far.

Very nice find indeed!  :salute:
Thanks so much for sharing.
I'll do anything for one of those.  :gimme:

Wow, some people here would sell their kidney for that one. Take care of it. You might be getting some trade/sell offers soon.

Yep, count me in on that one.  :salute:
At this stage I would offer more than my kidney for one of those.  :ahhh

I was at an antique mall and this one just caught my eye. I had walked by the case once before, but the second time I saw it. I had no idea it was this rare. Yay for finding cool stuff on accident!

The Tiffany ones are silver too.

They have a mark as shown in the picture and originally come with the chain shown in the other picture.

Thanks, didn't know they were marked.  The .925 is sterling.  Wonder what the 750 stands for?

750 tends to mean 18ct gold... there are various number systems in place from different places.

That Champ is a bit bloody sexy!

Ahh, that makes sense, thanks.

There si so little gold there, I wasn't even thinking along those lines.

A shame. I would put serious thought into whether you want to keep it or sell it. If you're not that into alox, it might be worth selling it and getting a standard model instead. You'll find plenty of willing buyers here. They went for about $79 new IIRC.

Holy S*******T!  What a way to start an Alox Collection.       :salute:

It's also very interesting that it has the advertising on the back, because this variation was not known, and it was not even known that these were available in the promotions market.  Is it OK if I touch up and resize your photos for SAKwiki?

Thanks for posting.

My query has nothing to do with your "Black Beauty." Which is indeed a beauty, to say the very least. No, instead, I am trying to guess your forum name. Does the "CMU" stand for Carnegie Mellon University???

Okay, now that we have that out of the way. PM me and I will give you my address so you can send the Beauty over to me for safe keeping. Ha! See, you finding the grail of Soldier knives when you weren't even looking for it once again proves my theory that even a blind squirrel gets an acorn every now and then.

The CMU actually stands for Central Michigan University. Not quite as well known as the "other" CMU, but I think it is a pretty decent place to go to school.

Ratz! Wrong AGAIN! Thanks, though. It was just a guess. I like to try and decipher some of the krazee personalized license plates I see on the road out here in Cali. I'm sure that Central Michigan U. is a great school, too.

Cheers, mate!

Just for people who don't know the 'Ciba-Geigy' name is from a Swiss pharmaceutical company that's now known as 'Novartis' http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Novartis

That info came thanks to my girlfriend who works in my local hospital lab.  :salute:

Nothing so fancy for me as what you guys have been showing off, but I have a black cellidor Explorer and a black cellidor Climber on the way.

I also just got an older and somewhat beat up CT34 from my wife, which is going to become a donor tool.  I'm going to have the pliers added to the Explorer, and the bit driver layer added to my Compact.  Just have to make arrangements for the modding.

The black Climber is going to be a gift for my son's Tae Kwon Do instructor; he was a great help to my son while I was away on my temporary job in Iowa, and I want to thank him for that.  I want to make a lanyard for it that looks something like a black belt though, so any suggestions would be welcome.

is there a specific knot they use to tie the belt?  if you could do something similar then that might work.

I'll ask my son, I think there is a special knot they use to tie their belts, I'll find out what it is.

Edit / Update: I've decided to make a short leash/lanyard using a cobra weave.  My wife knows how to do one, and I can put a carabiner on one end, and a lobster clip on the other.  I can also put some red cord inside it to simulate the look of the black belts that some of the advanced students have.

93mm blue Alox Deluxe Tinker for me to carry for a few months before I decide if I want to sell it. After a few weeks I think it's a keeper but I'll probably build myself another just like it on my red old cross scales. It costs $160 just to get the parts together for this one. I took the time to reshape and repolish the springs for the scissors and everything works and snaps like it came from the factory.

This one is up for sale now in the for sale forum in case anyone is interested. It has new old cross red scales on it now but I can go back to blue or even black HA if you like.

Small collection of SAK's, (but growing rapidly. :D) not so fast at this time. :( And the most important of all: Ze Zuper Zoldier by Steve!  :ahhh

Yep, that's the way mine came. That's a very study "gift box" it comes in. More like a vault! I especially like the saw blade on this knife and have used mine quite a bit while harvesting wood for walking sticks. It certainly is a handful, isn't it! Congratulations on your new Ranger, mate!

If that had a saw instead of pliers I'd be on it like a shot, but I see it's gone already! Ah well. Great looking knife mate!

Wonderful indeed. Not that wonderful is the fact that in Hungary, you can't wear/use a knife which has a blade longer than 80 milimeters. And how long are Wengers? 100? :(

I'm going to have the pliers added to the Explorer,
Perhaps you have already made up a firm mind on the matter, but I wouldn't do that. As it is, the 4-layer Explorer is just pocketable in casual pants. At least to me. Adding a thick 5th layer is going to forever relegate it to pouch or bag carry. I'd save the pliers for future use, or just leave them in the old CT and make it into a Mechanic.

By the way, you keep talking about "making arrangements" for the mods. I think you should take it on yourself. You seem like a smart guy, I bet you could do it. After reading the sticky thread on it, the hardest part seems to be sourcing the replacement pins. The one guy does some kind of set-up with pan head Torx screws, that'd be a neat way to go also.

It's just a square knot. So maybe start out with a black ribbon, then tie a square knot in the end. It will be a little more "round" than a typical lanyard, but I'm sure you'll let him know the significance and that you won't be hurt if he takes it off. Another thought: tie the "belt" and square knot around the box, (instead of a bow) and include a fancier lanyard inside. I'm a fan of the diamond/lanyard knot. It is bulky enough to give something to grab 'hold of, but not so bulky that it is pure decoration.

For those interested, here's an animation on how to tie it. I like this better than the YouTube tutorials, as one can go at one's own pace, without frantically pausing. I love that site; I actually paid the $5 for that guy's app, and have also learned how to tie the crown sinnet and spiral sinnet. (they're both easier than the diamond knot, believe it or not)

I like it too, but I'm having a hard time with the fact that they cost $10 more than an equivalent 58mm SAK. I think this one is going to live in my shoulder bag. I've been carrying a really thick SAK there lately, but for those times when I want to go lightweight, I can remove the big SAK and this little guy should have me covered.

What's interesting about it is that even though it is light and thin, I bet the four-way screwdriver of this can handle more torque than the fold-out nail file of a Classic, for example. We shall see. :)
