Suspense!!!

This Vic Soldier knife, new in package, is from a recent eBay auction. It was really just an impulse bid that I placed, not really thinking that I would win. But, I needed a fix! Anyway, it arrived today and now I find myself on the horns of the proverbial dilemma. Do I open it or do I just stash it in a drawer and forget about it? I have quite a few Soldier knives and rarely carry any of them. What's really killing me with this new knife is the suspense of not knowing what year is etched on it's main blade.

I need some advice!

Should I yield to my curiosity and open it? Or, should I just forget about what year it was made and put the unopened package away somewhere?

The suspense is killing me!!!

As a post script: I will add that I have no intention, at least in this moment, of re-selling this knife. Like I said, above, it was just a thrill buy. A last second eBay snipe that I was lucky enough to win with a relatively low bid. I will also add that I am leaning in the direction of popping that blister pack open and satisfying my curiosity. But then I remember what curiosity did to the Cat.

I would open it. I have six of those in that packaging and I opened them all.
It's not going to make any difference in value at all as it won't be a very old year stamp.
I almost have Alox Soldiers for every single year they were made now.
And it did not take me that long at all and most are brand new.

Only the Red and Silver Soldiers from the early 60's in good shape are worth some good money these days.
The rest are very easy to find still.
They made an a very large number in that style packaging with and without year stamps.

You should absolutely not open it. You have several Soldiers and probably Pioneers too, to use. The gray packaging puts it in a certain date range. Find out exactly when they went to the gray packaging and I think that should be good enough to pique your curiosity. I think it was around 1990 or so.

When you DO decide to sell it (and it is just a matter of time) then some tricky marketing will get you top dollar.

lol I'm pretty sure I was the last bid before you on that new in package Soldier.  I was kicking myself for losing.  Open it!  I'm guessing '96

Compact with a file...though a saw would have made more sense for a SAK called Trail Guide.

Nice knife!

It spurred me to research the name "Abercrombie and Fitch".  If you know the history, it's quite sad what the current company is all about.  If Cabela's ever goes that way, the world will end.

I am the proud owner of a sapphire CT41 now, from a trade with GigaHz.  It's a more impressive tool than I had thought it would be.

Thanks very much GH!  You are a gentleman and a scholar!   :salute:

I'm going to leave this one pristine.     It's beautiful just the way it is.

FYI, I PM'd you the tracking/confirmation no. for my shipment to you Brian.

Thanks again for doing the trade!  And also for the modding advice...  as soon as I can get some pin stock and bushings from Rotokid, I'm going to tear up an old, beat up CT34 my wife gave me to harvest the pliers and CT layer, and add the CT layer to my Compact, so I'll have one just like yours!

Moving is always a PITA ~ I hope it's going smoothly for you. Nice vintage A&F Standard you got there! How are the blades, opening and closing? From your pictures it looks brand new. I like the extra loop on those really old corkscrews. Nice score, Wayne!

Well, the move has been very difficult. 2 weeks and we are still not finished. Guess it is to be expected to have a move like this at least once in a lifetime.

The A & F knife is like new. Those blades and tools are shiny and walk and talk like new as well.

Sorry to hear that the move has been so rough. But, then again, I can't imagine a moving experience being anything but nerve wracking. I know all of mine have been. It's been almost 20 years since I've made a major move and I'm certainly grateful for that! Hang in there, man. I'm sure it will all be worth it once all the dust settles.

Good to hear that that beauty of a knife performs as sweet as it looks! Again, what a terrific score!

Cheers, my friend!

A well used Wenger adventurer that I got on the bay for $1.25.   Its my first restore and pimp out mod.  I want to get all the components back to sharp and high polish and make some HA alox scales for it.
PM me or email sakmodder [at] gmail . com if you are looking for custom SAK work.

My latest is a Victoria as well  :D

Gotta love those vintage bailers, rivets, and build quality.

Still looks like a dandy, and solid all the way.

I'm not going to top last week's new SAKs for a while yet, but it's great to start this week with the the second run of the Pioneer Scout (Apprentice with woodsaw) in the new Alox color Army Green.

Next to black you would notice the difference, but it is very dark with a grey green shade.  If it is sunny tomorrow and no one beats me to it I'll get a picture of it next to a black knife of some sort, and maybe something else.

I think this larger image on the wiki might give you a better look.

As much as I love the 93mm awl and the prytool/driver/bottle opener, this is a pretty good looking woods knife
