Thanks. Now I have the dilemma. Should I carry it or keep it in its box. I'm really tempted to edc it. I think I would really enjoy that.
I don’t have one of those, but I would absolutely carry anything I own if the mood struck me.  YMMV.

Sorry Reinier, all ready gave that some pocket time today. But I'm going to treat it with respect. It can be my sunday carry. I think I'm also going to take that wengers tool chest plus to hiking. How cool is that compass. I'm really person who enjoys using multitools, not just looking at them in mint condition and waiting them to gain more retail value.

Here's a model I never thought I'd own, but you know what — between this thing and the Companion (which I was also surprised at myself for buying), I'm actually really happy I pulled the trigger on these! This S557 has a very useful toolset. I can't wait to carry it for a bit and use it; I'm going to write a review after about a week or so of carrying it. I was not expecting to like it this much. And it was a very reasonable price — $65!

Huntsman, I think that's the standard price for these things over here as well. The only reason I ended up getting one of these was that it was on a very good sale. There were several other reasons I never got one of these before: the Evo scales (I didn't really like the look of them), the lack of plus scales or a pin slot (I like having a pin and pen in my scales), the location of the button (lever?) to unlock the blade (it seemed like it was in a bad position as one could accidentally trigger it during use), and then a pretty weird mechanism for the tension on the pliers/scissors. But I'm looking forward to carrying it and using it a bit. It seems like it has the potential to be an incredibly useful pocket toolkit for urban environments. I saw it described somewhere as a Tinker Deluxe Deluxe; and whereas I think perhaps Climber Deluxe Deluxe is more accurate, I think that description is pretty apt. Also, I thought there was like a little image engraved into the universal wrench tool, but mine doesn't seem to have that. Also also, does anyone know why it's called the S557??

The “S” stands for Security (or something similar), and designates 85mm models with a locking main blade.

557 was (part of) the original Wenger model number:
https://sakwiki.com/tiki-index.php?page=EVO+S557#Physical_Specifications

When Vic bought out Wenger, and later discontinued the Wenger brand but continued to produce some former Wenger models (with a few changes) as the Vic Delemont series, Vic (wisely, IMO) pretty much kept the model names  the same as what Wenger used, including the S557.

If there is more to the story than that, I am not aware of it.

I dunno why Vic didnt made picture of wrench usage on it but on Wengers it has mark (or at least on my cyclist has it)

I think it’s a safe bet that the engraving was deemed non-value adding and dropped to cut cost.

It actually didn’t add much value IMO, as it basically just illustrated that the tool was a wrench (obvious, or at least easily searchable online if anyone is confused), and that torque needed to be applied in the direction that would push the tool open, not the direction that would push the tool closed (duh).

 :iagree:

I have 2 of those LE cadets in that colour and it's def one of my faves too....I don't think it was that popular at the time, hence me picking up one of them pretty reasonably even though a few years later

Yes, Pioneer. I wish the yearly limited editions were still Pioneers instead of the PX.

 :iagree:

That is a STUNNING COLOR. “Orchid Violet”

Awl three side by side is so cool.

I think the LE RELEASED with a HUNTER just reduces the enchantment to chase the three.

Psyjohn, do you keep the Pioneer in a sheath or case of some sort to protect the coloured scale?

Tuisto, no sheath, although I'd like to get one. I carry it in my right front pocket asking with my Burt's Bees lip balm. Everything else goes in another pocket. I get a lot of joy in using such a beautiful Pioneer. I try to protect the finish, but it does show a bit of wear. Truth be told, I'm kind of looking forward to when it has that nice worn look you see on older Alox knives.

Fair enough, I know exactly what you mean — there are some guys on MTO with some beautifully worn alox (Magentus, for one). I really do like the look of them worn, since the grooves still retain their colour and the tops get worn and it just gives the SAK so much character. I wish I had a pocket where all I kept in it were lip balm and a SAK; the truth is I just have way too much crap in my pockets at any given point.

Nice to see you Chako!

I love the RED, have a couple PIONEERS still the boxes upstairs.

I just could not get behind the SENERGY models, the pocket clips are unnatural to me.

Yet the RED and BLUE of is it NAVY are sweet looking.

I understand, but I doubt I would ever expose that color to raw wear as you mention.

I acquired a DARK GREY PIONEER, several years back, a bargain price, $20 - 25 then.   It became my daily carry, and used most of its time cutting cable sheathing during installs of parking equipment.  In between cutting tasks would lie on rough concrete. And get slid around or tossed down a bit between pocket rides as I moved from lane island to island.

It took no time to show its patina (wear), only yo wish I had bought two or three.

Comparison to a new black cadet that arrived a week ago.   The DARK GREY originally look black when new.

I hear you. Not sure I like them either. My biggest issue is the strength of the backspring and the liner lock. It feels very dangerous closing the blade.

I also agree that worn alox has a nice look.

Chako, are you saying the backspring is stronger on the Synergy ones than on, for instance, a 93mm alox?
