P.S. The blue on the blades are only reflections from blue Swiss sky and not a heat treatment mistake  ;)

Purple pioneer is AMAZING:drool:

And the carbon fiber looks good to.

So, I got busy so it took me a week to get ten minutes to clean and oil the Climber Small that I picked up last week, but as demanded, here are photos.

Large and small together

There is a small chip on the base of the scale. Considering it's age and location, that's not a major scar, but I am debating getting new ones for it

And I missed it before tonight- there is some kind of scaring on the small blade, but again, for it's age, just proof that is was someplace and did something. What, we can only speculate.

Next objectives, a Salesman and a Artisan/Fieldmaster Small- I can get a Tinker Small any time, so I'm holding out for one with a square phillips. I've heard rumors of a Huntsman Small, but I've never seen one.

I've heard rumors of a Huntsman Small, but I've never seen one.

They exist, both with and without the long nail file - I have a couple of each. They tend to be older, though - even older than the typical 80s vintage 84mm w/ scissors. Most 84mm Hunstmans I've seen are from the mid 60s or earlier. In fact, one of my oldest knives is an 84mm Huntsman from the early 1940s.

 that is strange that the Huntsman, one of their most popular configurations, is so much rareer in 84mm than the small Fieldmaster (Artisan).  Maybe it was so popular in 91mm, they didn't see a need for an 84mm size?   Strange 84mm knives though were quite popular in the past.... I don't know what to make of that, I didn't really think about it before.  I have one, maybe two, I'll have to track them down to see what's up.

84mm SAKs rock !! It's a shame so many great old small SAKs are no longer in production.
I'm hunting vintage 84mm to get the scissors and use them on 84mm alox mods.
I've search the world but haven't found a small one with a file yet.

This might be my favorite advertising knife because it's advertising that great Swiss company we are all familair with Victoria.  What I think makes it really cool is the addtion of the Elinox and Victorinox tang stamps in combination with Victoria on the top scale.

Thanks, thats were i got the basics of what i did find, but theres no numbers for me to look up, nothing on the box, nor on the knife, but im satisfied, its brand new, not a scratch, and tight! it snaps, i mean SNAPS! the only thing that seams weird is both the can & bottle opener, are kinda more like a brushed finish, rather then a chrome finish like all my others? is this the alox style or does this sound funny?  JR

Your knife is number 0.8201.20 and described in Variation 1. The original Pioneer had Red Alox scales with the plain silver cross emblem until around 1999. These can be found with brass liners and/or brass keyring spacers/attachments.

Quote
...a brushed finish, rather then a chrome finish like all my others? is this the alox style or does this sound funny?

That's normal, it's a detail that can help date the knife; at one time those tools were not polished. Look inside the bottle opener/caplifter ... is the edge sharped like it might be for a scraper?

Numbers on the blade are when the knife was made with blades originally intended for the Soldier model.  They show up fairly regular, but the majority of the civilian Alox knives do not have any number on the blade.

Your emblem is known generally as the Swiss Cross, or plain cross.  Where the webpage says w/Logo it really should say with Victorinox Sheild Logo.

By noting the details of the knife someone here might be able to better estimate the year of that specific model.  If the box is original for that knife it can also help in dating.

impulsive purchase, Wenger SI almost new condition, 1972. Have been on the lookout for a silver soldier for a good price and with more than a toothpick for a blade

I like the flat finish of the steel in contrast to later SAK models. The F&F is not as immaculate as victorinox - the knife backspring is a bit raised above the scales, the finish of the backsprings and awl is a lot more crude. But I like it.  :)
