Izula or Necker
on: August 01, 2010, 11:39:11 PM
So, I'm looking at getting a new fixed blade. I want something lightweight and effective for backcountry usage. These 2 seem like good options, and the incoming EsKaBar looks like it could be a good one too. So, input?

They're both great knives.  I have an Izula because I preferred the handle just a little bit more (I have small hands, YMMV), but same steel, similar (if not exactly the same) size and weight, very good sheaths on both knives.  The Becker Necker can be found just a wee bit cheaper.

Really, the only major difference is the handle - whichever one is more comfortable to you is probably going to be your best bet.

I have a becker necker, not really my cup of tea. I suppose my criticism isn't for it in particular but other similar ones as well. They are smaller than you'd expect from photos, the handle is too short, a 3 finger knife. Even with cord wrap the handle is still very thin and not very hand filling, which in my experience leads to fatigue quickly. The plus sheath weight is also more than I'm comfortable with around neck. Factory edge is crap, but I suppose that's user fixable.

I'm getting rid of mine.

Izula is 1095, becker is 0170-6, which is same as cold steel's old carbon v.

All current Becker Neckers are 1095 steel, same as the Izula

I sold my Izula because it's too small for me. I handled the Necker and didn't like its feel. I handled a Mil-SPIE 3 from TOPS and felt it was very comfortable. If you're set between the Izula or the Necker I would go with the Necker because of its longer blade.

It's 1095 cro-van, and I have on good authority it's a made up name for 50100b/0170-6.

I had them both and traded them both.  I did like the Izula a bit better, mainly for the ease of cord wrapping, and the smaller sheath.  I did not like the handle hole at the bottom, however.

If I was to recommend one it would be the Izula, or the Swamp Warden if you can find one.  The Warden is a little longer with a slightly longer handle.

I have been wondering about the Swamp Warden as well. That might just be a possibility if I can find it.

You won't regret it.  The only reason I traded mine was...well...I just don't need a neck knife.  I carried one a few times in my back pocket, but you have to pull it out, unsheath it, cut, resheath, back in pocket.  Whereas with my Sebbie I cut what I am cutting and its done, no one notices.  Plus I am about to start an office job hopefully, and a small fixed blade would just be overkill for what I would be doing.
