What to get?
on: August 03, 2010, 03:35:52 PM
It's only a month until it's my birthday and people start asking what's on my wishlist  :) I would love to get a SAK or two, but something that would fit into my current "collection". It has to be standard stuff which is easy available in Germany, so that blue farmer is no option. And not too expensive, although I would love to have a Swisstool.

I already have a Spartan, a Huntsman, a Huntsman lite, a Manager, a Classic and a Swisscard lite. Alox models: Farmer, Pioneer black and Soldier.

I am thinking about a Compact, a Cybertool and an Alox model with pruning blade.

What do you think? Any other suggestions? I have read quite a lot about the smaller 85mm models, but never had one in hand....

You can't go wrong with either a Compact or CyberTool. :tu:

Another couple good options would also be the Cadet or Sportsman II; granted, with where you are geographically, you also stand the chance of actually finding some extremely nice NOS for inexpensive prices in some forgotten hardware/Mom'n'Pop store. :)

How could I forget to mention the Cadet? I already have one, it's one of my favorite EDC knifes. Small, elegant, and has the most important tools. And it fits even in the smallest pockets of womens pants.

Assuming this would be a user, my vote would be for either a Cadet, Compact or Pioneer Harvester (or all of the above). These three, along with a Yeoman, are my EDC knives.

How about a Traveller? There is just something cool about a weather predicting SAK.

Nice one, but no legal EDC carry over here :ahhh Strange but true. They even took it away from two soldiers on their way home when the police checked them on the train  :twak:

Why not get something a little larger but non OH or locking. A 108mm Solo.  Cheap enough and for the time being still available across Europe.
I'm not taking any more mod orders at present, sorry.

A locking SAK would be OK. But not a OH which is locking....  I like the idea of a larger, locking SAK. Never thought of them, but why not  :tu: Now I have to take a look at them to find out what I like.

GAK- German Army Knife.

Victorinox has the contract for the new knife for the German Army.  The design is based on the OH-Trekker design :tu:

Thanks for all your suggestions! And thanks again for that generous offer for the blue Farmer! Sure I want one, but still not sure if I can take your great offer...

My current list looks like that:
- Vic Compact
- Vic Cybertool 34
- Vic Sentinel (not the OH), maybe the one with clip
- an Alox model with prunig blade. Not sure if I want a harvester or the simple model with just the large blade and the pruning blade

And I need a plan how to put them on the wishlist. I cant't present them all at once to everyone who is asking. They will call me crazy for wanting 4 knifes, even more as they know that I already have one  :ahhh

It depends on what you would like to do with.
This one should be great : http://www.wenger.ch/evowood-14-1-014-009-830 or you can check the ranger series, maybe you will find something. The mike horn one is nice (not very useful for me but still nice). Otherwise the swiss army 70 is a good everyday use sak (unfortunately without scissor of course). Or for a gift, the victorinox damascus pioneer is nice too (but not perfect) but probably hard to find now.
Your list is good.

Well, I think the blue farmer is a very special knife and I want one badly.  So, there's my vote.  But if you are iffy on that, get the CT34.  Great knife.  You will love the drivers.

The single layer pruner is very elegant.  It's just a tiny bit too narrow, and the blades can jam against each other when closed.  The same applies to the single-layer electrician (AKA apprentice).

The two and three layer knives don't have this (minor) problem.
