Grr SAK stolen
on: August 05, 2010, 10:31:07 PM
Well today I had my bag taken while dealing with an incident on the tube (grr arseholes), in it was my one and only SAK a Sportsman. Now while I always seem to carry another one handed opener with me while at work, it's the SAK that saw the most use.

I will admit now that I know very little about SAKs, so I am looking for suggestions on what to replace the Sportsman with. The Large Blade, the corkscrew and the awl were the tools that saw the most use, from time to time I would also use the screwdriver too.

Mostly used at work while carrying out security reviews and the like.

I think my ideal replacement would be something that looks a little more classy so maybe an Alox model in black or silver, or even a wood one (do they do an off the shelf wood version?)

Any help or suggestions you guys can offer would be great.

Thanks

TI

A Cadet might suit you. You would loose the corkscrew, toothpick and tweezers compared to the Sportsman though.  Victorinox have been known to issue wooden handled SAKs in the past.  I can't think of anything that would match your needs off the peg though.
I'm not taking any more mod orders at present, sorry.

Sorry to hear your loss.

InspectorWinter, if you haven't visited SAKWiki, I would strongly suggest you peruse this site at your leisure before making your decision. Do look at the knife list. I am sure you will be able to find a model that would suit your needs, be it a Victorinox or a Wenger.

Happy searching.  :salute:

How about a 91mm Spartan, since you use the corkscrew a lot? If you don't have the tools to make wooden scales yourself, maybe you could PM one of those thai guys (look at the "show your sak mods" thread and you seriousely can't miss their awesome work) and have them make you some

A waiter would work you only lose the awl (I know an awlful thought), but I would say just get another Sportsman (it is going to be as small as you can go and get everything).

All that said I would look into an upgrade, maybe a Climber, or a Wenger SI

Ahh just looking at the SAKWiki now, thanks it's very interesting and I am an idiot for not seeing it before

Thanks Neil, just looking at the Cadet now and I like it, that and the Soldier seem good to me. I have been looking round at their wooden handled ones but the ones I find all seem to be too large (layers wise).

Yep, always look on the positive side, thankfully I had my laptop bag with me and the bag I lost only had a SAK, jacket and my empty lunchbox in it...

Sadly 91mm would make it too large for me to carry when I am not working (Grr) and that is one of the primary uses I have for a SAK... But yeah I am looking at and being amazed by some of their work now in that thread.

Thanks for your suggestions guys, the trouble is the more I look around the more the SAK I want is every single one I look at  :D

Sadly 91mm would make it too large for me to carry when I am not working (Grr) and that is one of the primary uses I have for a SAK...

91mm is too large?  If you're worried because 91mm is more than the 3-inches allowed by UK law, I think you can be reassured.  AFAIK the 91mm range is ok because the main blade is still under 3-inches and therefore not forbidden.  The cutting edge of the main blade is 59mm, and the total length of the blade beyond the grip is 68mm.

As for alox or wood handles, your choices are limited.  Only the enormous Swisschamp is available with wood handles, whereas the alox range doesn't include a corkscrew.

The Spartan includes all your favourite tools, and is available in various colours including a smart black.  The fractionally fatter Climber adds a useful pair of scissors, and is also available in black.

Sorry to hear that your SAK has been stolen  :(

If you want something small for your pocket I can highly recommend the Cadet! It's elegant, and really thin and small! No corkscrew though, and the file isn't a real awl . If you can live without it on that occasions, it's a beautiful little knife. I carry it on all occasions I want a light and unobstrousive knife.

Who steals a SAK?  It's not like they are terribly expensive or anything.  Really, $20 to $30 will get you a decent SAK any day of the week.  Bummer dude, I hope the guy who stole it cuts himself every time he tries to use it.  I would go with a spartan or tinker.  They are great little EDC knives.  You would lose the corkscrew on the tinker though, it would seem the spartan would fit you the best.

They stole my bag, the SAK was in one of the jacket pockets...

I managed to pick up another Sportsman in the interim period while I decide what else I want. I'm in the middle of moving house so I expect it'll see some use over the next week  :D
