It's probably worth mentioning that my RS got wet in salt water, which is so corrosive.  I suspect if it were fresh water I wouldn't have had this problem.

Under the same conditions would a BO version of the Swisstool be less likely to rust?

One of my ex Aussie Army BO SwissTool's file was quite rusty.
Cleaned up fine just took a bit of time & elbow grease.
Wish I had taken rusty pics  :D :D >:D >:D :D :D

Not surprising as it's not H1 steel and even that can rust so I've read, I'm sure it's just surface rust which can be rubbed of with wire wool  :tu: that said you mentioned not rinsing and wiping thoroughly, there ya go  ;)

H1 doesn't rust.  One of my local knife shops set up a demonstration - Rock Salt in a glass jar filled with salt water.  A month in and the blade's perfectly rust free.

Lets test this one I'll stick a SAK blade in a glass of salt water for a month, lets see what happens ;)

[edit] test started plenty of rock salt in a jar, chances are not a lot will happen  ;)

(Image removed from quote.)
That was my science project in seventh grade. I tested SAKs in fresh and salt water plus acid rain for good measure (because, why not acid rain, ya know?) After a couple weeks, both fresh and salt water had rust (salt was really bad. More than just surface rust if I recall correctly). The chemicals in the acid rain actually seemed to polish the steel a bit...  ::)

I thought there'd be more around the surface of the water than at the tip!

Fancy that eh?
I used to come here a lot.

I have recently seen some spots of surface rust on my SwissTool RS. I haven't seen another Victorinox rust, but I still know that any steel can rust in the right environment. Mine has never been in the water, but i haven't treated it with Ballistol as i do with all my other stuff. It is surface rust so I will clean it and use Ballistol and see what happens.

trailmaster, I see you're from greece. Do you love next the ocean? Salsmurfer in the air can cause steel to rust.

salColorful Enunciationer

Hey grant.. apparently the word "s a l t w a t e r" gets filtered due to it containing the word "tw*t".

Which is actually pretty funny. I'm gonna start pronouncing it so as to emphasize that when in conversation.

SalTW*Ter  :D

Back to the subject at hand...

Before this instance, it was common knowledge that Vic multis will never rust under any circumstances whatsoever. They could be safely stored in vats of seawater for decades on end with no signs of corrosion. Prior to this, rust was only known to plague Leatherman tools. And now suddenly, we are seeing rust on our Vic multis.

We all know for a fact that Leatherman's quality control has been on a steady decline for a while now, leading to at least 9 out of every ten tools made being broken or faulty or dissolving into a pile of rusty dust on the nightstand over night.

I fear now that in light of these rust spots, one can only conclude that Victorinox QC is also backsliding. Long gone are the days of Vic tools being impervious to lightning, attacks by brain-eating ghouls, bubonic plague, rust, and wholly inappropriate usage such as trying to use the blade to lever a cement block, or closing the pliers on a stone with your foot. Yes my brothers and sisters, Vic QC has gone down the toilet. Just like Leatherman.

So get your packing boxes ready.. you'll need six or seven of them, as it is likely that Vic will replace your broken tool with another broken tool at least six times.

These are truly dark times. And I mean that.. it's dark in here. I'd go get my LM flashlight, but it crumbled into pieces last night after I accidentally dropped it onto a pillow. I'd go get my Vic flashlight, but it broke when I tried to use it as a tire iron.

Looks like the Gerber and SOG forums will be seeing a lot more business.

Just for fun test concluded 5 weeks today, everybody say "Thank the tool Gods for that" . ::)

Anyways the black mark you see is the water line,I felt tipped it for reference.

The other side,

After a quick scrub with a scourer,no rust magic eh!  ::)

The other side,

Take this test with a pinch of salt I did it only for fun

What?all 50400 of them? LOL

[edit] For those not into math, like myself here's a tip  ;)
1 Number of days in a week = 7

2 Number of hours in a day = 24

3 Number of minutes in an hour = 60

4 Number of minutes in a week = 7 x 24 x 60 = 10080 min

5 Number of minutes in 5 weeks = 10080 x 5 = 50400 min

[edit] and to end there are 3600 secs in a hour and FYI there are 31.5 million seconds in a year  ;)

[edit] looking at that a year isn't that long when you think about it,it takes me 20 million already  :ahhh  :ahhh  :D
