Scenery and Other Pics
on: August 09, 2010, 09:55:45 PM
Since I began geocaching it has taking me to some interesting and beautiful places on my doorstep  :tu: Add to this I rarely leave the house without a bag now means I always have my camera to hand for the perfect shot :D

I plan to update this thread as I go; hope you like them  :D

This is the P&O's European Highlander. It was built in Shimonoseki Japan; I can't picture sailing this ship all the way from Japan to here. It's a big ship here but I imagine it would be tiny on the high seas  :o

This rock formation is known locally as Madman's Window. The name goes back nearly two centuries ago, to the time when a young girl was drowned in Glenarm Bay.  Her sweetheart was so deeply moved by her death that he lost his sanity.  Each day he would sit at the rock, gazing through the hole or ‘window,’ waiting for his girlfriend to return from the waters to him.

Part of the Antrim Coast Road. It came fifth in a  Jacob's Creek survey of places with spectacular views beating the Grand Canyon, Angel Falls and Machu Picchu. I've never seen those places but the views here are pretty good  :tu: [Just realised my son's spikey hair in this shot, oops]

These are fossils left in a recent cache I visited. They were actually found not far from the above Antrim Coast Road photo. It is a very rich fossil site and every year produces many fossils, including occasional isolated bones and teeth of ichthyosaurs and plesiosaurs.

I took this pic of the brownish grasshopper, it wasn't until a few photos in that I realised his friend. Camo at its best  :tu:

Sallagh Braes as they sweep down to the Irish Sea :)

I was taking a picture of this slug and remembered that some see the Juice line as 'two humping slugs'  ::) :D So I had to whip out the XE6 for a quick group shot, I think it was love at first sight :D

Very nice pictures! I especially like the macro ones with the insects. Geocaching had the same effect on me, and I ended up buying a DSLR because I refused to visit more awesome places with only a point and shoot. The kit lense isn't the best for macro though, so I really envy those pictures. I've done mostly landscape pictures using Microsoft's ICE program (image COmposite Editor), that let's you take several pictures and combine them to one giant photo. All these are taken while out geocaching:

Thanks guys

Insect pics while fun can be a pain; they aren't the most cooperative of subjects lol. The spider tooks ages to get the right one and even then it's no the best, it wasn't his fault it was the wind blowing the web. My camera was going  :ahhh

Agreed  :tu: When we first saw them we were actually looking from the left if you know what I mean.

I like the red bug, looks like he's about to a triple somersault twist dive into the pool  :tu:

Some more insect pics plus something a bit random I hope you'll like :D

The same ship from earlier coming in to port.

Ladybird meet black and red fly thing, black and red fly thing meet ladybird :D

Ever since I was young this rock has always been like this. It still makes me smile when I see it :D Is it a cat, a polar bear or something else?

Ok next up are the annual bonfires that appear across my wee country each July. I am thinking of devoting a thread to these. Some call them great architecture, others say they are a nuisance of days gone by. In 2009 it cost £200,000 to clean up after these bonfires, other figures suggest £5,000 per bonfire. As you can see if it'll burn it will be on the bonfire; tyres, furniture, computer monitors, etc. It is very much ingrained in a certain part of the community's culture that'll be here a long time still.

If I do my thread I'll add more detail but basically beacons were lit in the late 17th century in Ireland to herald the arrival of King William of Orange [Protestant] and aid his navigation. He then defeated James II [Catholic] at the Battle of the Boyne in 1690. That is why bonfires are lit on the 11th July each year and to a lesser extent why there's so much trouble here.

Great pics, thanks for sharing! You live in a beautiful landscape!

It reminds me that I should take more pictures while out geocaching. I always carry a small point and shoot camera with me, but most of the time I just relax and enjoy while geocaching, and forget to take pictures. I use it mostly to document hints for multicaches and such stuff. I do a lot of nature photography, but it doesn't work well for me if I try to combine it with geocaching. I leave my DSLR equipment at home (it is just too heavy to carry around all day...), and when I expect something worth to take pictures of I carry a Lumix bridge camera.
