How old are the boxes with the pale green paper inserts?  The reason why I ask is because all of the Solos, Farmers, and Pioneers I have/had came with it, but they had checkered old alox scales; did the 93mm alox line not come in ribbed versions?

All the ones I have are from the 1970s and early 1980s.

I'm not a big 58mm collector, but here are a couple cool vintage 58mm knives I've come across in my collecting:

BTW that is the oldest box I have.
I would be interested to see what the earlier ones look like??  ??? ???

That box is a typical late 1950s/early 1960s box, which goes well with that Tinker which looks to be from about 1960-1961. I have Master Craftsman from the same era (large awl, no rivets) but a couple years older and it came in the exact same box.

The oldest box I've seen was on eBay in an auction I didn't win. It was for a Fisherman from the 1952-1958 era. The box is similar to one you show here, with a couple minor differences. Based on the stampings on the Fisherman, it was made in the later part of the 52-58 time period:

Yes it is from the Tinker

Me either before I got this one. It's the only one I've seen since. The vintage 58mm (esp the exposed rivet kind) seem to be somewhat hard to find, which is odd considering how many Classics et al are seized and sold on eBay every day. I can only guess that either (a) Vic didn't make very many of the exposed rivet kind, or (b) they were considered more "disposable" than their 84mm and 91mm brothers, and thus many just got binned when they wore out instead of saved. Both are just WA guesses though.

I like riveted 58mm  :)

Me too. Like I said, not a huge 58mm fan, but the riveted ones are just too cool to pass up. I can only imagine the work that went into peening down those tiny little rivets. Never seen square rivets.

Anyone have any idea when they started making the 58mm line?

The only SAK I have that might qualify as vintage is an original Ambassador (with the screw in the scissors) but I bought new scales for it to replace the beat to crap ones that were on it when I got it.

Not really vintage, but it's been retired by Victorinox.
This is a photo of my Cavalier that I added to the SAK Wiki last year.  Got it off of eBay.

This 91mm knife has no name. It has the number 3.3311 and was never in a catalog. But somehow it was sold between 1986 and 2004. The seller in the shop where I bought it remembers it was offered to him by a Victorinox-representative as a special run.

Some more nice ones!

Duder, wonder why we don't see more of those. I can't remember if I've seen it before, but I really like it. This basic Lumberjack configuration would make a great combo or compact outdoors knife in the 91mm size.  Vic did a special short run for SwissBianco with the the Phillips screwdriver that had regular and stayglow scales.

Indeed, I love looking to see what everyone gets in.

Duder:  Might as well call it a Drunken Plumberjack until someone else comes along with an actual name - and no, not Golfer, Neil. :P

I won an eBay lot which had a vintage Elinox Lumberjack with the standard cap lifter (instead of combo-tool).  It is very cool with the vintage Victorinox shield scales w/o slots for the toothpick/tweezers.  In the same lot was a vintage Tinker small, but with the older Philips which has the can key slot.  The knife is generally beaten, but I was able to clean and polish it to decent shape.  I tossed the destroyed scales and put on some newer black cellidors.  I am very happy with my 84mm additions to my collection.  Hopefully I can get some photos posted this weekend.  This week has been hell at the office, but it was knife to be in SAK land for a few hours after I got home to 2 packages (also purchased a Camo Hunter).
