Outdoor Gym
on:
August 09, 2010, 08:40:00 PM
Our local council has invested some cash into healthy living etc. and installed these 'outdoor gym' machines
They've placed them along a popular walking spot which leads to the town park.
They are fun and easy to use for young and old alike. It is hard not to pass them without having a go
They also appear to be quite vandal proof as well
There was a rowing type one but the thugs trashed
Anyone else seen these appear in their area?

That's pretty slick! I like it! It's a shame though that someone always has to try and see if they can tear stuff up and break it when it's left out in the open though. Hopefully that rowing one was just an accident or someone being silly and not using it right.

Be nice if we had some type of park like that, around here we put a Ritters on the way to Mc Donald's
just so we can keep our energy up to make it there

Your council must think every dog walker needs to get fit?
I've seen something just like that in a park in north London, very well made and robust. I
think there a great idea, I wish we had them around here.

But aren't the ones out and about the ones already getting into shape? Kinda pointless...

Basically you sit on the seat and push the bars away from thus lifting your own body weight
That way everyone can give it a go instead of having a fixed weight

Ok I found the company that did the work, their website explains a bit more about each machine. Also shows others available

It would appear there are quite a few across the UK as well

We have a few set up in our local park, just a few minutes away from my home. But most machines are designed for older people, very simple (but I guess effective) exercises to keep your balance and flexibility. Some of them might be useful for all, I guess. But I never tried them...

Brilliant idea I reckon
The more incentive for people to engage in activity the better. We saw something similar down in Poole by a lake/park kinda thing. I thought it was groovy

I like the design and robustness of the construction A1
I think that is peoples taxes well spent.

Nuph showed me these pics when you posted them (and then we spent 10 minutes trying to remember where the ones we saw were!) but I was thinking about them the other day. Our local park has the old fashioned wooden ones that look like they're made out of Lincoln logs (I don't think they sell them here in the UK - a kids wooden construction toy for making log cabins, great fun) I was trying to track them all down and see what you do on each one but was disappointed to find that most of them had rotted into piles of wet wood...which got me thinking, I wonder what the lasting power is on these metal ones and how much maintenance they need.
They certainly look more like something more people would have a go on than the dodgy wooden ones.
It's a shame that our council is making such drastic cuts and we're extremely unlikely to get anything like this near to us.
