Flick out plier's

So all you gerber fan's, are the flick out plier's really useful or a bit of a gimmick?

And if your a long time user of the flick out gerber plier's, would you be put off by regular butterfly pliers

It's not a gimmik at all IMO.  It's the fastest opening (pliers anyways) multitool.  When you first get one and try it you're like "WTF, this doesn't even work!!!" as you try to get them to snap out...but in a few hours you'dd be deploying them like it's nothing

That's what i mean, once your used to them does it make you think twice about buying a multi that doesn't have that feature

I like the idea of the flick out pliers- I think the SOG SwitchPlier may be faster, but Gerbers have the benefit of being useful.

It's a really good design, but that rattle is a little disconcerting.

Well, maybe the bike rattling will overshadow the rattling of the Gerber!  Fortunately you don't have to worry about the Gerber coming apart at 140kmh!

Given that it was virtually the same kind of fall that Christopher Reeve took, I consider myself lucky to have only lost part of my face!

As for loosing teeth on a ducati, a bloke I knew did it at about 120mph on the M20, turn's out there wasnt enough grease on the front bearing's, so the front wheel seized up, and over the high side he went

If you ask me, he was practicing stoppie's when he did it

Maybe Ducatis are cheaper over there, but they cost so much here that no one who would accidentally let bearings seize up could afford one!

Worst part is, I am terrible at maintenance.  I like things I don't have to maintain because I have this bad habit of letting proper maintenance slide...

Fixing things yes- in fact, that's why I got into tools- to fix the things I didn't maintain so they broke!

I love the flick-out-pliers. Much of my multi use is plier related so quick, easy access is nice to use. Like everything else, variety is the spice of the multi world.

Niggely little thing's like a rattle I can probably live with, but are there any more glaring fault's

When I need them, it's convenient to flick the pliers out. When I need a knife, or a file, or a driver, or any other tool, it's annoying that you MUST flick the pliers out.

The handles don't feel like they can take the same kind of squeezing pressure as butterfly opening tools can.  I am certain they will, but they simply don't feel as sturdy as other types.  They also don't open very wide compared to others, which can be a pain when trying to get at or use certain tools.  The MP600 bottle opener is completely useless for opening stubby bottles because it simply cannot reach the cap.



The handle, when closed impacts the shoulder of the bottle and won't allow the bottom part of the cap lifter to slip under the lip of the cap.  When you open the handles, they come in contact with the bottle lower down, and again keeping the bottom part of the cap lifter from getting at the cap.

As with anything, there s a certain amount of give and take- since the handles are a "U" shape with the rounded part of the "U" being on the outside, they are generally quite comfortable to use.

The 'rattle' of the plier head never concerned me as being faulty or weak...it's a part of the design.  They need some slack so they can be easily extended and retracted.

See now I would consider that quite a big flaw , It must make the tool unnecassarily  awkward to use

Everything in life (and multitools!) is a trade-off. With a Gerber you get faster pliers ............but slower knives and tools

It's not actually that awkward as the pliers tend to flick open with even a fairly gentle wrist action- not like some other multis where you have to actually open the pliers manually.  It's even less effort than it takes to flip open a butterfly type tool.  I know it sounds odd, but it's actually a pretty decent system.

There was a customer who had his Ducati Monster for sale...$2,500.

It ran fine, but apparently his kid tipped it over, and there was some dents and scratches on one side.  Apparently the price plummets if there's some cosmetic damage.

The prise for cosmetic part's is nothing short of horrifiying

I don't no about the newer monster's but the older pre S4 model's if they fell on there exausts they'd bend the frame as well

Duke's are one of those bike that will NEVER be cheap to put back on the road, but when they are working perfectly, they really are beautiful motorcycle's

My first multi was a gerber...I used it a LOT..Then I got a super tool. The only thing I missed was the flick out pliers. I never was a true fan of the gerber, even though I used it so much..but it was all I had. The screwdrivers were too short, the bottle opener was non-existent, and the file didn't have a 3rd side metal saw. However, I still wish I could transplant the serrated blade from that gerber to my current LM. IMHO, the only good thing about the gerber was the fact that it had one handed pliers...everything else was kinda crappy.
