Worst tool trades/sales?
on: September 08, 2007, 07:43:44 AM
Thinking back earlier today I realized a few things. First, when I was younger I really wish someone had hit me with a brick upside the head and made me slow down and think things through. In that same vein my mind reached back a few years and thought of all the horrible multi-tool trades and sales I made over the years.

The highlights:
-I once traded my pristine early 1990's PST to an acquaintence of mine for a small bottle of whiskey and 3 cigars.  :twak:

-When made my first move as an 18 year old on my own I was so strapped for cash I sold my original SuperTool on eBay for 12$. I had no idea what it was worth and remember being happy someone had bought that anchor-weight.  :twak:

-I traded away several leather Leatherman sheaths for cheap slipjoint knives because I wore sweatpants all the time and had no need for them.  :twak:

-I sold an Old Wave on CPF (I think) for 25$, it was in near mint condition.  :pok:

So, what stupid sales/trades have you done?

About 15-16 American dollars for a PST.

I do not trade or sell my multitools.  I guess that I could get rid of some of my tactical Ninja Kung-fu doohickey knives because I usually do not carry them anymore since I started carrying multitools.

I try not to sell or trade too many tools, but I have run out of tactical knives to trade and I just don't have the kind of income necessary to support my new tool habits!

Up to now I don't think I have made a bad sale or trade.  Separate from their utility, I look upon the accumulation of multi-tools as a hobby, not a business.  I like to try them out and if they are a good fit, keep and use them.  If not, I may give some away as gifts, sell off others, or keep them anyway because they appeal to me in some way.

Because I have the patience to always wait for sales and promotions on what interests me, if I sell some later, I sometimes make more than originally paid, or lose very little on the resale.  Thus far, I am running a small surplus on the ones sold, but more have been making the cut than anticipated, so I have a collection in spite of my minimalist ideals.    ::)

I usually price below market and could possibly earn more putting the surplus up on ebay.  However, counting the time involved in taking photos, writing copy, subtracting fees etc., it is not worth the extra effort and too much like commerce.  I do other things for a living.  Rather they should go to tradesmen or enthusiasts who appreciate good multi-tools and will give them comfortable pockets to ride in and plenty of work to do  ;D.

I didn't actually label myself as a collector until earlier this year, until then I would buy and try multis and knives and then sell the ones I didn't find useful with reckless abandon. I really wish I hadn't gotten rid of that SuperTool, it was the first multi-tool I remember owning and went to my first semester of college with me.

I don't have any good stories for this thread, because I never seem to get rid of anything. I've been a fanatical pack rat for most of my life. Some kind of twisted mentallity about not wanting to part with anything because sooner or later I'll need it or regret it.

My wife thinks I'm pathetic.   :P :D

I'm sure my wife has better terms to describe me!

There are very few SAKs or tools that I haven't wished I'd kept!

In my case, I can't seem to get rid of them even when I want to.  Apart from those I sold, no regrets, I tried to give away redundant multi-tools to friends and relatives, and all (long stories omitted) found their way back.  Those include a PST, Super Tool, and Imperial Kamp King, all of which I had cherished in their day but had been replaced.  With the best of intentions, I had thought that bestowing such righteous gadgets upon the recipients could help ease their burden and brighten their lives, but it was not to be.
OTOH, multi-tools purchased for the purpose have remained with whoever I gifted.

As it stands, except for those lost or stolen, every multi-tool that I ever considered keepers are still with me.  They seemed to have taken the commitment more seriously than I.

Sold a 1995 PST for $10.
Then trade a PST for a Crunch.
Enjoy!

I didn't experience tool trade and I don’t think I will experience it. I developed love for all my tools and if ever I will encounter difficult times I will look for other personal belongings to dispose but not my multiools.
