I keep thinking about getting a Surge, I really like the tool selection. I've borrowed a friends one (well, he has asked me to clean it up and put an edge back on the blade) but I can't get over how it feels loose and rattles. I think this is something I could learn to live with but a they all the same?

Regards, Jon.

I think they all develop some play after enough use.  I find brand spankers are smooth and tight then they start loosening up. I don't even notice but I understand how it must bother some people. A quick comparison to the gerbers I've handled though and the surge seems super tight!

Ummm… I just noticed this today.  If you'll notice the one on the right, all the nail nicks are the same length. Seems menial but it's pretty annoying. Anybody else ever see this? Should I send it in to be replaced?

The two Surges that were sent as replacements were not staggered. Jonny P. was saying the new Surge have scattered nail nicks. Haven't seen a one yet. Guess it depends upon how lucky you feel.  :)

Boooo...! No the staggered ones I've had are older in respect to purchase dates.  I hope this isn't they are producing them now, I'm not a fan of clumping.

The one on the left is 0810 and the non staggered is 0310... weird?  I hate to be a baby but I can't get at the small bit driver without everything else.  I'll be chocked if I ever need warranty work and get stuck with the non staggered, the one I have doesn't matter as it due for the chopping block getting shears put in.  I have one on the way from LM so we shall see, it was a staggered version sent in.

My surge is from 0710 (month-year) and is like the one on the right.
The other design looks much more functional indeed.

This is the only Surge Owners Club I could find..its a year old but I think its the right thread!

Got my surge today!  Have been wanting one for a while and after I got a 20$ off West Marine coupon in the mail- combines with my 25$ gift card I had- it was time.

I really like the power of the pliers and the awl.  My wave now feels very small in comparison.  One main reason I wanted it now is I have to send my wave in for repairs and I dont want to be with only my wingman for the next few weeks.

I will be bringing it to a volunteer house build in the next week and I will see how it stacks up agaisnt the wave for some odd jobs

I think your Surge will stack up just fine. I bought one a few years ago (6? 7?) to use when working as a custom flooring installer (my specialty was throw rugs ;) ). Daily tasks included cutting lots of cardboard and banding straps, opening bags of cement and grout, pulling staples and nails, hammering staples and nails, sharpening tools with the diamond file, tightening and loosening what ever fit into the pliers, etc. I also bought the bit kit and it paid for itself in days by saving trips back to the truck for an odd bit like a Torx (who would use them around the house anyways???).

I was not easy on my Surge, and would consider some of my uses quite abusive. Yet it never broke or was damaged. It got scratched and dented and dirty, but it never left me in hanging. Not like every Gerber multi I've broken...

That said, a Surge is not a tool for a gentile tinkerer, or those who's belts match their loafers. A Surge does not fit in the pockets of slacks. A Surge is for men with work to be done. Men who wear 2" belts because they are practical. Men who want to get the work done so they can go enjoy a cold beer with the guys while watching the ladies on stage dance. Or I guess it could be for women with work to be done, I just haven't met them yet. ;)

I still have my Surge today, and after a good cleaning and refinishing it looks like it has had a gentle life. Maybe one day I'll pass it on to a grand child...

Dave

I also got an urge for surge. But they are so expensive here, 160 euros is more than double compared to 80$.

Picked up the Bosch blade set to go with the surge.  I am carrying I the metal saw blade in the sheath.  Fits in the pouch that carries the file and saw the surge came with.  This is a good set of 5 extra blades to go with the surge t hook blade replacer.

eBay is your friend, for all LM tools.. I got a mint MUT for 60 dollars; cost here, I think, 180 Euros... My Surge was even cheaper.

I made it, It's metal sawzall blade that I ground down with Dremel to fit the blade exchanger. The only problem with it is that is wiggles a lot. But I made a small shim to make it a little tighter :)

Structural ironworker here carrying LM tools for work purposes.

For years I carried the Crunch at work, but I always had Wave file/saw envy, so when I finally lost the Crunch off the side of a high rise I upgraded to a Surge. I've been carrying it at work for a couple months now, bit kit and all, and..I love it but I wish it was a little more like the Wave.

The size and weight are no problem for me. I'm 6-5 and my toolbelt already weighs about 25 lbs, more with an 8lb beater with a sawed off handle in one bolt bag. I love the large pliers. They cut nine wire with ease and have enough strength to break a jammed 11/16ths drill bit loose when stuck in rebar in a concrete wall, act as a backup key to remove a jammed angle grinder collet or unstick a stubborn flashback arrestor fitting.

I've even come to like the scissors which I regarded as a frippery when I first got the tool. I just used them the other day to cut a cardboard template for some quick field fabrication that needed cutting complex curves in 6-inch steel pipe.

My problem with the Surge is that, nice as the bit kit and removable saw/file system is, in my work I just can't stop to fiddle components out of a pack in my belt and swap them into the tool. Everything is always in a hurry, usually up in the air, and my eyesight isn't what it used to be. I want the file, or the saw (both of which I use constantly) NOW. I can't be going "wait, hold on guys, I'll get that, hang on a sec, gotta get this saw blade out...darn it...ok...don't drop it now...gotta get the file back in the sheath...any day now!"

I need to yank out the tool, open it, and have everything I need ready to go. I'm always using the philips head screwdriver and the 5mm allen key and with the Surge I have to switch back and forth between these bits.

So my ideal Surge would ditch the useless eyeglass-screwdriver bit holder for another bit driver, or a dedicated Philips screwdriver...or at the very least give me a bit with a philips head on one side and an allen key on the other; and give me a dedicated saw AND file, or even better, two dedicated exchangeable saw/file holders for replacing worn blades. Not sure how all this would fit together...I guess that's what the genius engineers at LM are for.

Naturally, I actually needed the eyeglass tool a couple of months ago, at my mom's house, for her glasses...and the tool was of course on my work belt in a gangbox somewhere.

My theory is that LM does things like putting that ridiculous mini-bit driver on a SUrge to keep us all just a little bit dissatisfied so that we'll keep searching for the perfect tool.

Anyway, my Surge-at-work experiment is drawing to a close and I think I'm probably going to the Wave. I'll keep the Surge in my backpack that I take on bike trips and keep it around the house.
