Hey fellas,

Joined the forum about a week or two ago. I have four Leatherman tools (two of them for years, two more recent acquisitions).

...So... I'm on the hunt for a good Blast when I stumbled on a supposedly gently used Surge with nylon sheath, blade exchanger and extra little case for extra blades $40.

If it Is in good shape, is that a "Jump on it" even if it is the pre-2013 players type?

Welcome Thundahbeagle!
Forty bucks sounds great to me . But I'm in Australia and our prices are through the roof . So I can't really comment...
I can't even get a used wingman for forty bucks here!

Thanks Sawyer. Still good info. By the way, $40 American and I could get a NEW Wingman.

Pancho - only one pic of it closed so far. Looks to be pre- 2013 based on the scales. Have not yet personally inspected it.

I like the tool set of the Blast VERY much, and am not as interested in the Wave/ Surge "outside" one-hand blade configuration. It is a tool, less so a weapon, after all. However, I read here that these are built like tanks and can cut through 9 wire all day, so...might be worth picking it up.

Will announce it if I join the group.

Thanks for the feedback

Y-yikes! It's official.

This Surge, dates 0507, has indeed been gently used. Used, yes. But gently.

And man,  it heavy! I usually have the PST ii in leather on my belt. I keep the Original Supertool in its nylon in my day pack. This thing needs to be in a long hike pack or a friggin toolbox or the center console of my truck, I think.

Seriously I could get used to carrying it on my belt easily, but it is a heavy one comparatively speaking.

Actions is good. Locks preventing the blade from opening when using the plyers is good. Plyer alignment is good. Have the saw in place and the replacement file in the sheath, in the other sheath.

Needs a cleaning and some 3-in-1, and will be good as new.

Just missing the larger bit. Leatherman still sell those?

And here it is in its second natural habitat - next to an amber liquid in a frosty mug...Or is that a darker amber liquid in a tumbler? I might have had a little bit of both just now. Either way.

At a quick glance, I noticed this today...

Is this acceptable? It bothers me a little.
But some encouragement for satisfaction would help :salute:

Surge after a hard day's work before washing up my hands.
It's a heavy hard worker, and wears blemishes well. The only real cosmetic damage is from opening and closing them a few hundred times or more in the last year or so. You won't ever see rust on it though. I am MT OCD and keep PBlaster on all my MTs.  :)
Fits well in hand for its' size and weight.

I prefer to encourage you, and I am no expert on the Surge, but in that top pic, that handle sure seems like this girl I once knew - just a little twisted but still a lot of fun to get your hands on. 'Ello, 'hello?

Who am I to say? Just going buy the pics, the tolerances of mine don't seem  as tight as yours either.

Is it just that bottom corner of the scales, or do you notice the whole handle like that?

Nice. Those newer plyer heads sure stand out from the older ones.

I just "washed" my new old model with isopropyl alcohol, then used 3-in-1 oil in the joints and a thin coat all over it. Then worked it and wiped it down.

My PST ii feels like a pencil by comparison.

The whole handle tapers out of line from the plier end to the bottom of the handles. Not a HUGE deal I guess

Indeed. 3in1 is what I use if one of my MTs or pocket knives is going into storage for a while. Keeps them nice and purdy.
Thanks for the isopropyl recommendation. I have been using low odor mineral spirits to clean off the 3in1 film when they come out of storage.
I'll give the iso a try, as it is a lot cheaper.

Well, the tips of my PST ii are slightly offset. Doesn't affect performance.

Whatever the hell you were doing to twist a Surge must have been pretty robust stuff. Just consider it a badge of honor and experience!

I've only ever used mineral oil / spirits on watch crystals and stuff like that. Does it work better to clean metal than isopropyl? I use the alcohol to clean metal because what I don't wipe off just evaporates. Used it to clean off grimy electrical connections, so I figured it would be as effective on stainless...

While I do like this old Surge I just got, I have to admit e action is not as smooth  as my original Super Tool.

Someone else near the beginning of this club thread had a real click when they closed theirs. I have that sometimes depending how I close it. Also, I noticed, depending how I open it, I can get the top of the ruler to rub slightly along the other ruler, making a light ratcheting sound.

Anyone else get that?

It opens and closes fine and seems strong as can be. No wear marks, scrapes, scratches or dents from any of that. Just a little noise

I don't know about better or not, but with my job I get furniture stain on my MTs quite often, so the mineral spirits does a dandy job at getting the dried stain off and out of the MT. I hsve not tried iso yet, but this week should be a good week to take my Surge on an adventure. Lots of tearing old junk apart and the like. Then Saturday night it gets a wash. 8)

My Surge is only a couple of weeks old! No strenuous tasks put on it yet. Oh well...
As for the click. My 'new' Surge clicks together at the plier end for the last millimetre or so. Has done since I got it. No performance strain on either defects though
