VIC SAK: Is this possible?
on: August 20, 2010, 06:23:18 PM
I had an idea for modding a climber to turn it into a SAK that has what I mostly use.
My idea was to take a climber, and remove the brass rods. The small blade and can opener would go, and the large blade and the bottle opener would be combined into a single layer. The scissors would stay. The corkscrew would also go, but the hook and awl would stay.

Would this work, and would it be possible to reuse the brass rod from the 3 layer climber for such a 2 layer tool?

Aside from an awl and corkscrew, that's basically the Compact.  It could theoretically be possible, but the standard bottle opener couldn't be used, as it's crimped incorrectly for being placed opposite the large blade.  You'd need to hunt down a hard-to-find (and pricey) pre-combo tool bottle opener as what was used on the Bantam, Waiter, et al. for a year or three; of course, the size would be incorrect on it, too, going from 84mm to 91mm.  Hmm, what about just getting a Compact and taking a Pioneer and removing the opener layer? ^^; :)

I've looked at the compact, and it tends to be expensive. I have a Climber that I use, it's not really too big, just thought I'd experiment with another Climber I have on the way from eBay. Maybe I'll find a Compact cheap somewhere, could always do with less weight in my pocket

put a want add on the forum.  They aren't all that rare and I have seen some on this forum for down right cheap at times.  Also, ask Felinevet if he as any used ones.  I'm willing to bet he does.

Yeah, sticking an awl on a Compact would get you where you're wanting to go.  I just tested it on a bag of parts I had sitting around, and the awl fits nicely where the corkscrew normally goes.  The awl is a *tad* narrower though, so you might have to find/manufacture a small brass spacer to take out wobble.

Matter of fact, I just built a two-blade-and-corkscrew single layer yesterday, and might take the corkscrew off to do this mod for my own use as a whittling knife.  Call it a Weevil or something :)
Half-ass done wholeheartedly!

The awl isn't strictly necessary. In fact, I think my perfect EDC SAK would be a single layer knife with a small blade and scissors + alox scales, if that was just possible. Speaking of, has anyone ever put a 58mm knife on a 91mm sak? Would think that the blade (and a washer) would be possible to fit on the back instead of a corkscrew

Really though I don't think it's much point trying to make the Climber smaller, I don't really mind the size that much... just need something to fiddle with
