Advertising on the mainblade ?
on: August 21, 2010, 12:19:51 AM

Is a knife with an advertising on the mainblade more or less worth?

I saw a Victorinox red Alox Firstmate. It has a small text etched on mainblade. It's the name of a Victorinox retailer.
The knife is not cheap. > 100 $

Would you buy it and be happy to get a very rare knife, because this etching is probably only on less than 100 knives, or would you wait and hope to get a "clean" one some day?

What's your opinion about advertising on mainblades?

If you had the option, if you could buy a Firstmate without or one with an etched blade at same price, which one would you prefer?

I have no idea how it affects the value, though my guess is that it won't add anything to it myself.  I know that if I was given the option I would have the one with the clean blade, but I just not a fan of brand names/logo's on anything.
Be excellent to each other and always know where your towel is.

If I had a choice, I'd take the clean blade.

I would buy one with a dealer etch if the knife was rare model.

I've noticed it seems to have been common in Germany many years ago to etch customer's 'name and street' on the main blade.  not sure how they etched them back then.  Am I dreaming, or is this true?

When I have the choice I take also the clean blade but when no choice I buy the etched blade and wait for the oppertunity to buy the clean one and sell the etched one.
I think that when the etching is not deep that pollishing out the etching is an option to.

If its the dealer's name then it doesn't bother me at all, just adds to the character of the knife.  If its company advertising then unless its for something quirky or fun then I think it detracts.

Here's one I had until very recently and I liked the fact that the blade etching matched up with the label in the box...

I'm not taking any more mod orders at present, sorry.
