Loose part on my Farmer
on: August 22, 2010, 03:16:44 PM
First of all, I'm new here and I would like to say hello to all of you.
Two weeks ago I've bought an Alox Farmer and after a few days I've noticed that the part that holds a key ring is not fixed in a place. It has a little "walk" when I'm touching it with my finger. This is what they answered from Victorinox:

Dear Mr...
Thank you very much for your e-mail dated 15th August 2010 and being interested in the «Farmer 0.8241.26» from Victorinox. We are pleased to answer your question.
It is true that the key ring spacer is not fixed and there is some kind of “play”. This is necessary for the functionality of the knife. If you open the blade for example, the return spring bends and needs some space so that the parts do not jam.
If you require any further information, please do not hesitate to contact us.
Yours sincerely,

Victorinox AG

Franziska Zuber

But I'm not sure that we understood each other correctly. Ther is no "play" while I'm opening tools (like on my Mountaineer for example), but when the all tools are closed.
Does anyone have the same experience?
Thanks.

P.S. It's great from Victorinox that they've answered so quickly. That shows that they care for they costumers.

Hi, welcome to the forum.

I had a look at my farmer just now and notice the same thing. Now I've just checked a few other SAKs from my collection and notice the same thing on just about all of them. So it is unlikely to be an individual fault. It doesn't bother me. Some modders (SAK construction and destruction experts) will probably be able to give you a more technical answer.

Thanks for your welcome and answers!

I'm glad it's not a failure because Victorinox is not known as a company that makes mistakes.

Here is a few pisc of my (so far) collection. Well, Mountaineer is my girlfriends.

Well, Mountaineer is my girlfriends.
I am jealous of you guys with girlfriends who carry knives.  My wife is not really into that sort of thing.  I did convince her it was a good idea to keep a Victorinox Classic SD in her purse though.  She finds the scissors very useful.  I agree on that front.  I have a black alox Classic on my key ring...though I obviously carry an additional SAK in the same pocket.

Thanx guys!

@Aloxfan-at first my girlfriend wasn't interested in SAK, but after I bought it to her she use it almost every day (mostly scissors) and carrying it in her purse. And guess what, today she said that she would like to have a "purple Juice". I was shocked at first, but than I said: "Why not Vic Spirit?"  :climber:

the part that holds a key ring is not fixed in a place. It has a little "walk" when I'm touching it with my finger.
Just checked out my Farmers and Pioneers.  All of them have the wiggle on the keyring holder.  Crazy thing is I never noticed it until now.  Thanks man...

I noticed the same on my Farmer and Pioneer some time ago, but didn't bother about it. Good to hear that it is normal!

This thread clearly shows that Vics QC are going down the drain...  :pok: ;)

Who would believe LM if they replied the same way with the alleged rust issues:
This is necessary for the functionality of the knifetool.

its a curious psychological fact that when a cult leader's prediction of the end of the world or arrival of the mothership or whatever fail to materialize :ahhh, this actually strengthens the believers' faith, not weakens it :salute:. In this spirit, I would like to add that Vic's imperfections only further prove their ultimate divine perfection :ahhh :ahhh  :ahhh :ahhh :salute: :ahhh :ahhh.

I know for a fact that if you were to rivet the pin tight enough so that the plate does not shift...the blades and springs will bind.

First of all, I'm new here and I would like to say hello to all of you.
Two weeks ago I've bought an Alox Farmer and after a few days I've noticed that the part that holds a key ring is not fixed in a place.

I believe that it is a matter of construction.
Look at it – every "solid part" in a knife is holded by at least two rivets (scales, liners), moving parts are holded with tension of springs (springs, blades).
Moving part (blades) in a knife is holded by 1 rivet – to be able to move.

This small part – you are talking about is holded just by 1 rivet – so it is a little bit moveable.
This small part is by every  91mm, 85mm knife – it is not possible to hold it with 2 rivets to be unmovable, because there are tools to be moving.

Try this
Take any 85mm/91mm knife, open the small blade to a half opened position and try to push that thing next to the small blade (with needle, pen, awl or something)  – you will see that EVERY knife has this part and it has some play (because it holds on a single rivet and nothing else).
You just didn´t noticed it, because by those knives is the keyring a part of backspring (Openers-layer) and not part of that little thing.
Wenger 85mm knives have simmilar part next to the main blade – do the same – open the main blade in half-opened position and push it with pen – it is possible to move.

I think that this part have to have some play, because the spring is moving there too,
If it wouldn´t be movable then springs wouldn´t move there too.

It is nothing wrong with it – it is just the normal and usual part of knife-construction – 85mm, 91mm, 93mm, maybe others too.

You are right knyha. Here is the official Victorinox explanation:

Dear Mr. ...
Thank you very much for your replay dated 19th August 2010. We are pleased to send you additional information in more details.
The eyelet for the key ring of a Swiss Army Knife is attached to the spring system.

On the other hand, the eyelet of an Alox Knife is attached to a separate spacer, as you can see in the following link.

We assume that this difference in construction causes the effect what you are calling “little walk". Nevertheless, if you are not happy with its quality please do not hesitate to send the knife to our customer service in your country. We are very sorry for the trouble you have had in this matter.

Victorinox guarantees all knives and tools to be of first class stainless steel and also guarantees a life time against any defects in material and workmanship (2 years for electronic components).
