something that really chaps my chilli is that the boy is being charged with a 'hate crime'.... does anyone know what exactly a hate crime is? is it somehow a worse crime? is there such a thing as a 'love crime'? is crime less of a crime if it's commited w/o emotion?

I believe that's what racially motivated crime is called. I know it makes no sense, I didn't write the law. There's actually an south park episode on this exact topic, how the name is retarded.

A hate crime isn't committed without emotion, quite the opposite.

Love and hate are both extremely strong motivators for acts of violence - just base human nature I guess.

yes i agree but a crime is still just a crime. emotion is irrelevant.

I'm not sure I fully agree with that.  I think that passionate emotion can make a person more of a risk to commit a second or third crime of the same nature.  There is a difference I think.  Perhaps because those that commit non-emotional crimes are in it for themselves, while those that commit emotional crimes are in it to strike out at somebody or something.  Just seems more of a risk to others to me.

so people that are emotionless/ (sociopathic) are less likely to repeat  crime? JMHO but it's right the opposit i think. if emotion is the motivator of a criminal act then the the likelyhood to repeat a crime is no more or less probable than if a crime is commited by a sociopath. indeed, sociopathic behavior would likely create more crime exactly due to the lack of emotion.

to use the phrase "hate crime" is kinda like making an excuse for the crime itself or elevating the status of the crime due to it's nature. it's BS... supose the kid in the cab attemped to robbed the cabby and wacked him up. would that make his actions any less of an offense?
