A fab day on Snowdon
on: August 25, 2010, 01:18:43 AM
Went for hike on Sunday with 3 friends, to the top of Snowdon via the Watkin path and South Ridge.

Our destination.

On the way back down.

Not long after starting our journey back down, an RAF Sea King was flying around our vicinity for several minutes. Eventually, it hovered over the ridge opposite us. The crew dropped smoke (just visible on the picture) to gauge wind speed and direction (usually done prior to a winch operation). I don't know whether this was for real or an excercise.

I used to come here a lot.

It's a beautiful part of the country - haven't been up there for years sadly.

Thanks for the pics  :tu:

What a lovely view you get from up there! :) Thanks for sharing your trip Millhouse :)

Q: In the third photo, is that a bit of old wall, or a small dam holding back the lake, or...?

I think it is part of the footpath coming in from the west. We were going up from the southeast.

Shockingly expensive that Railway, yet always chocka! (Mostly with American tourists in truth :P)

I'll always have a soft spot for Snowdon and the surrounding park - I spent so much of my childhood in those hills that it almost feels like home :)

I went there about 12 years ago and can remember how expensive the railway was  :o It would have cost a small fortune for the whole family to go up . Is there still Britains highest mailbox there ?

Great pics Millhouse .

No mailbox there anymore.

The train is very expensive, £25 for an adult return ticket. Despite the cost, the trains are nearly always full. Inevitably, most people coming up on the train are badly dressed for the location. Even in Summer, it can be windy and cold. You often see a train arrive at the top, the people quickly dive into the visitor centre for shelter, then get the next train back down. They miss out on having a wander around the top and enjoying the views.
