Wenger SAK W/ Built-in Flashlight
on: August 25, 2010, 04:29:13 AM
My parents brought me back a Swiss Army Knife from their trip to Switzerland. It has a built-in flashlight that uses 2 AAAA batteries. The main blade has Wenger on it. There is a cap lifter/screwdriver, can opener, nail file, awl, corkscrew, tooth pick, and tweezers. The tweezers are also used to open the battery compartment.

Anybody ever seen one of these?

IIRC, that's the Wenger Spotlight, yes?  I've never held one in person, like I've not most Wengers, but that name sounds correct. :tu:

Thanks Neil, that be the one!! BUT... Mine takes two AAAA which are smaller than the regular AAA and mine doesn't have any scissors. It looks like mine, though.

Okay I just read the comment about the batteries....

Just curious, are Wengers bad or just not your cup of tea? How does Wenger stack up to Victorinox? Thanks for the info!  :salute:

They're just not my cup of tea; plus I have contacts with dealers who deal primarily in Victorinox, not Wenger.  Though, I do like the Alinghi models, though they're too large for me. *shrugs*  Their Blackout model, though outrageously priced, looks neat, too.

Yes, that knife is similar to the laser that I do have. It is also powered by AAAA batteries.

I myself like Wenger knives a bit better then Victorinox for several reasons. From a purely collector standpoint, Wenger has always came out with the more interesting knives. If you are into the wacky and zany, then Wenger is for you. For example, you can get a sewing specific Wenger called the Bernina, or the Minathor that contains Bergeon watch tools, metal telescopic models for the boardroom, the Snife series, scientific chromatography knives, etc...

Older Wengers may have back spring issues. I have heard talk, but have never encountered any issues with my older knives.  I am sure though that at one time, Wenger did have quality control issues. Did you also know that Wenger was bought out by Victorinox years ago...so technically, its all one big company now, albeit with different production plants, and products. Likewise, most of the older Wenger archives went up in flames, consequently many older Wenger knives have no names or history…making collecting them that bit more interesting.

Victorinox is more tried and true. You don't see too many weird wacky designs. For me, Victorinox tends to be a bit blander. I have more Vics then Wengers, but I enjoy the Wengers a little bit more for their interesting slant on things.
A little Leatherman information.

Funny (interesting) thing is my Wenger came with a Victorinox sheath. At least that is how it was given to me.
