  • You're amongst friends.
Sorry if this thread has been done before, but I think it's time for a fresh go at it.  Given the nationalities found here on the forum, I'd like to hear about what some of your favorite local foods are.  In the not so distant future, I intend to do some travelling around the different countries and would like some inspiration.

I'll start off by saying Jacksonville Florida where I'm from is not really known for its BBQ, but we have a pretty good joint near us that does a very great job.  I like the smoked turkey or diced pork sandwiches and their fried yellow squash.  I also love their house baked beans and cole slaw   They have some great signature sauces as well to spice or sweeten things up a bit  :tu:

I'm fond of some chicken fried steak smothered in brown gravy..some roasted diced red taters with a hint of red pepper and butter, steamed okra and squash ..some sweet yellow corn bread and a tall mug of luzianne ice tea..sweetened with pure cane sugar.

For dessert..new york style cheesecake with blueberry juice soaked topping sitting on a rice crispy treat square.

If you're in Maryland, you gotta LOVE steamed crabs with Old Bay seasoning and ice cold beer.  Mallets for us non-natives, but the Eastern Shore folk use a short thick knife to open the crabs.

NB: DO NOT order them in Virginia or Pennsylvania.  They just don't know how to make them correctly.  The further you get from the Chesapeake Bay, the worse the steaming.

Damn.  Gonna have to get some this weekend...

Roasted Lamb is one of my favs, but my absolute favorite are some good fajitas.  Not really a regional delicassy, well maybe in some areas of GA, but thats another argument altogether.

If you should ever find your way up this way, we have some of the world's best lobster here, although I don't eat seafood so I really can't comment myself.  Some great Canadian delicacies include poutine (as Chako mentioned) which is cheese curds, French fries and gravy:

Beaver Tails are also pretty common here:

The best ones I ever had were on the Rideau Canal in Ottawa, but you can find them all over the place.

Here on the east coast we have donair shops almost everywhere, and you'd be missing something good if you didn't try one or more if you were ever in my neck of the woods.

It's spiced ground beef cooked on a spit then sliced into strips and rolled in a pita with cheese, onions, tomato and a sweet donair sauce, which is kind of like a garlic Ranch type sauce.  It's hard to explain, but really good eating.

Some other really good things I've eaten across the country are bannock on the prairies, which is kind of an unleavened bread that keeps good forever and is good with fresh jam, and pretty well anything maple.  We have some great maple fudges up here, but the best is in Quebec when the sap starts running again, and you actually try the syrup almost right out of the tree!  It's boiled and prepared right in front of you, then they dip a popsicle stick into it and toss it in the snow to cool.  You pull it out and have perhaps the finest treat known to man!

Now I'm hungry....

The Southern boy in me wants Biscuts, Chicken Fried Steak and Eggs over medium all covered in cream or sausage gravy with a side of hash browns for breakfast.

The Mexican side of me says 3 Lengua Tacos, Pico de Gallo, Tortilla Chips with Hot Sauce, Limes and a beer for lunch.

Forget supper, I am full!

Depends what mood i'm in. In no particular order:

1. Full English breakfast
2. Roast Peking Duck
3. Lamb Vindaloo
4. Roast Chicken
If you find yourself in a fair fight, your tactics suck.
