Gerber Clutch
on: September 11, 2007, 12:29:45 PM
Recently I was very kindly given a Gerber Clutch (you know who you are ;D)

This isn't going to be a review more an initial impression, for a more through review (or just a good read) check this review out...

http://www.multitool.org/gerber/keychain-tools/gerber-clutch.html

I've got to say this is a well thought out and executed tool :) When you see the price you kind of expect it to be pretty naff quality wise, but it's not! and while it not up to Victorinox standards it really ain't bad :)

The feel and lock up is nice and tight, with no rattle's, there's a good selection of tool's and while none of them are particularly big or long enough to be as useful as a full size multi or sak, there not small enough to fit on a keyring, the clutch is, so consequently your much more likely to have it on you when the need arises ;)

So If you fancy having a set of quality small plier's in a package not much bigger than a 58mm classic or leatherman micra, that you can sling on your keys or in your pocket or work bag and forget about till you need it, I'd say go for a clutch, you won't regret in :)

Glad to hear you like your little Clutch.  I certainly don't regret picking up a Clutch, which I've had for a couple of months now.  Clutch has become my EDC and I use it more often now than the Vic Tinker, which is also EDC.

The Clutch is sort of like my Beretta 950 .25 ACP - not a full-sized tool for serious work, but can come in handy on occasion.  Small enough and light enough so there's no good reason not to always have it with me.  A .25 in the pocket beats a .45 sitting at home because it's too heavy-bulky to EDC!

I've debated with myself for sometime about adding something like the Clutch to my keyring to complement my Vic Manager.More than once I could've used something a bit more than tweezers.

I revently got one also, and the impliments are nailbreakingly hard to get out.

I'd rather carry my P4 than the Clutch...although the Clutch pliers are a bit bigger than the P4 which could be a good thing.  The handles on the Clutch are kind of awkward for me when using the pliers...they fold out really wide.

Well built though, I woulden't think twice to EDC it (If I didn't have my P4 that is ;D )

The implements on my new Clutch were all a little stiff - stiffer to open than implements on a brand new SAK - but they all snapped open and closed with real certitude, exhibiting zero slop when open.

However, the bottle-opener/screwdriver implement on my Clutch was beyond stiff.  It was enough of a nailbreaker that I nearly returned it to Lowes.

Instead, I cycled it open and closed every few seconds while watching a 2-hour movie on television.  By the end of the movie it was opening much easier and has since loosened up even more.  After using my Clutch for a few months, all of the implements now open up smoother and easier.

Someone mentioned tweezers - the Clutch tweezers are of a very good design.  Much more useful than SAK tweezers.

They're short, but their angled tips mate perfectly and the acute-angle corner allows you to firmly grab very tiny objects.

For example, they have the dexterity and control to easily grab and tear off tiny little pieces of surface skin to expose a buried splinter.  They can then grasp and easily remove that splinter.  Try doing that with the SAK tweezers.

For digging out splinters, the Clutch tweezers are actually better than many dedicated tweezers I've used.

The Clutch pliers work much better for me than LMan P4 pliers, but YMMV.  I love their spring loading, their lack of slop, and the precise mating of their tips.  Obviously, the Clutch pliers will break if enough torque is applied, but for light duty jobs they are great.

Every time I pull the Clutch out of my pocket and use the pliers, it still gives me a little thrill.  Pliers that good in a compact little keychain tool are amazing.

I have had a Clutch For almost a year now thought it was a great tool at first but, the screwdriver broke when I used it on a screw imagine that, sent it back got a new one.  Then I was using the blade to cut a piece of plastic, the blade folded backwards on me, sent it back got a new one.  Now the other day I had to change a light bulb and I need a pair of pliers to loosen a small washer that was just past hand tight.  I used my clutch and the plier braces in the handle bent.  I thought about sending it back but I think I am just going to get a LM P4 now.

That really stinks- I've had about 30 of them pass through my hands in the last couple of years and there doesn't seem to be any problem with most of them.  I personally didn't use all of them, but the folks that own them now are mostly all members here or in SOSAK.  I haven't heard many complaints about them- certainly not at the level you describe!

The P4 is a good tool too and I doubt you'll be disappointed in it.

Sounds like you need a bigger multitool. A juice would be a good one, its sort of a medium size so you're not jumping up too much and should last you a long time.

It does work providing your not in a hurry, and take your time, but it's a fair compromise given the size of the tool, the only decent philipps on a compact keyring tool that I've used is the one on the 58mm saks, oh and there magnetic too :)

Well so far I have to say I am very inpressed! :)  There are a lot of functions for such a small tool.

I like the pliers and the way they spring open.  I have given the phillips a go as well and I have to say that I was surprised at how well it worked.

I have found though that the tools are difficult to get out, but I know this is a complaint on all clutch's and that a bit of opening a closing should ease this a little.
