We own an oldtimer military 4x4 car. A Volvo L3315 HT, build in 1966. Once a year, we meet with people who have similar cars (Volvo Laplander, L3314 or L3315, C202, C303, 3304) a few km from here in a small city called Melle for one weekend. Usually we have people from Germany, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Sweden, Denmark, Belgium and sometimes other countries. Due to the bad weather this year we had only guests from Germany, Switzerland and the Netherlands. The place where we meet and camp was flooded just the day before because of the heavy rain, but on friday the water was down just enough that we could drive on the place. We start with a barbecue on friday (and inspecting the other cars), on saturday we go to an area where we can do some offroad driving (not easy in Germany, usually you have to find an private area that is designed for offroad driving), in the evening another barbecue, and on sunday after breakfast everyone leaves. It's always great to meet these pepole. Most of them just enjoy those cars and don't have any military background. And it's just fun to drive around and especially to go offroad  :tu:

Enough writing, here are the pictures:

All cars lined up, ready to go:

Our car, Volvo L3315 HT

On the way (first car a Volvo C202):

Difficult terrain, not everyone is tortueing their car as much as they do...

Watching my better half driving (he prefers to prevent the car from damage while driving in difficult terrain). I love to sit inside the car in this terrain, too, but you can't take good pictures from the inside... Unfortunately I haven't learned to drive the car in such terrain yet. First I wanted to try here, but after I saw how many nasty holes there were I stayed away from driving, I didn't want to damage the car in one of these holes... I will start driving offroad in easier terrain.

Watching the others drive is almost as much fun:

This was a nasty hole, no chance to go out without help...

Another car caught in a wet hole that was deeper than they thought it was...

Time for some good video shots (the car is a Volvo C303)

Lesson learned, test how deep that hole is!

Volvo 3304, no terrain is hard enough for this car!

Another C303

Our L3315 HT

(Have a look at the wheels...)

This happens if you undersestimate the terrain. No one was hurt, and the car was fine, too.

All cars, even the ones which were stuck in the water holes and turned over, could drive back to the camp without problems. Just one needed fresh oil.

But next day, problems with our car...

We lost all cooling fluid!

There was a hole in this tube... an old hole, fixed about 2 years ago and now the fixed part broke.

Duckt tape fixed it, and we could drive home  :D

All in all a great weekend!

That looks like a lot of fun. I love old military vehicles.

So, will the duck tape hold for another 2 years.  :pok:  :pok:  :D

Maybe. We will look for a replacement of this part, but the duck tape is only part of the repair. We put a piece of an bycicle tube inside of this tube and the duck tape only fixes the ends of the bycicle tube. So there's no pressure on the duck tape, and I guess it could last for a long time.

Thanks! Yes, it is always a wonderful weekend.  Great, relaxed people, and you always find a helping hand if anyone has a problem with the car. And driving one of these old cars is something special every time, but if you do it togehther with others, it's wonderful. I love it  :tu:

And of course it is always a good reason to pack all your tools, lights, camping gear, and EDC-stuff. Sure something is needed  :D

Ohhhh, a Volvo that have served in Norway!

In Norway we just call them Volvo Felt, direct translated means Volvo Field but it would be wrong to call it a Field since Felt is really the terrain the military operate in and it was supposed to serve in the Norwegian woods in case of a Soviet invasion. I really like the car and I hope someday that I will own one.

BTW, loved the pics! THANKS!!

But.......But......But....This is a C303 with Norwegian camo, we just had the L3314N, never the C303. And it ain't Swedish since they don't use that color.

I guess the camo is added just after restauration, and doesn't say anything about the history of the car (in both cases). In this case, I guess the owner just likes the Norwegian camo and he didn't realize that it doesn't fit at all  ;) As I mentioned in my first post, most of us are not military people, we just like those cars.

That is true, it just looked strange, that’s all.

A little fun fact for you. In the Norwegian instruction manual it said “This is a terrain vehicle that can be used on the road when necessary”

Especially here in Germany, it is not fun to drive them on the road. Too slow, especially if you have to drive on the Autobahn. These C303 might be better, but our L3315 H is so slow that everyone overtakes you...  On smaller roads it is better, but in most cases you tend to be an obstacle... :ahhh And we don't have much opportunity to go offroad. Most forest roads are closed, and you have to go to special private areas, where you have to pay quite a lot to use these terrains  :(

The Volvo’s are made for driving in the terrain and not on the road. I think that the max speed for the L3314N is probably 110 km/h, in the instruction manual it says in 4th gear at 4500 rpm the speed is 96 km/h. The Mercedes Benz 240 GD that replaced the L3314N have a max speed of 120 km/h and is slightly better on the road and have more comfortable seats than the Volvo. Just shows you that the military doesn’t do comfort.

True, but you have to drive them on the road over here... If we don't have to, we don't drive any faster than 80 km/h with ours. You have to push it really hard to go any faster, and it eats too much then, too. It's over 40 years old, so we don't have to do that  ;)

That looks like it was great fun Turnstone, thanks for the pictures! :tu: The model that you have would be very useful around here, as we have many back roads and public lands to explore. :) I wonder if any of those Volvos ever made it to the U.S.? ???

(but I still like the little Volvo's better, as I imagine these would be much slower on roadways) :-\
