Testing Rotokid's kevlar gloves
on: September 01, 2010, 10:51:15 PM
As most of you probably know, rotokid sells kevlar gloves on his SOSAK shop, they are decently priced at $4 for a pair and $10 for three. I bought some a while ago for use with knife related tasks, they look just like regular gloves, so I don't know how they would actually hold up when cut. Today one glove wore out so I thought I'd actually test it.

Knife used is my Tenacious, sharpened at 40°.

First two cuts it blitzed through one of the fingers, no different from regular cotton gloves. However right after that, it literally stopped cutting immediately. Sawing motion helped a little bit, and I manage to make three more cuts, then it would barely go through even one layer of fabric. When I examined the edge under light, I can see pretty heavy edge rolling, to the point I can feel them with my fingers. While 8cr13mov isn't top of the line stuff, it's still better than most of the knives out there.

So if you use it for SAK modding, you should be pretty safe with it, it's only when you get to hair splitting sharp knives you will have a problem, even then it's only for a cut or two.  :D

So are we saying these are not good?

Kevlar® gloves are heat and cut resistant, and will not melt, catch fire, or conduct electricity.

I wonder if they tried cutting them with properly sharp knives, or if they took knives they've been using for a month or so and tried cutting with those for the testing.

I used to work in a meat plant. On the free hand they had the chainmail glove but the other was a cut resistant glove.

Can't remember if it was kevlar but do remember being fascinated when one of the guys showed me how it worked; with no lost fingers :D

Depends on use. Trying to grab an attacker's knife with it is probably not a bad idea, but for their intended purpose (SAK modding) they are perfectly fine, consider the factory edge on SAK is nothing to write home about and the one you use to mod is probably even duller.

There's are also different grade of gloves, this is on the lower end, the ones you can get from fishing store has more kevlar in it and I would imagine more cut resistant, but they are like $20 for a single one.

The chain mail ones are cool but also runs $150+ each if I recall. Then again I saw those in science supply catalog and those guys probably wrote the definitely of "overpriced" in the dictionary.

Isn't that the truth. Every year, I look at many catalogues every year with hardly no budget to buy for my classes. It pains me greatly.

It's even worse when you get to university level. My dad's work need something to behead mice with, there's this mice guillotine for $800, it's just a friggin paper cutter with a clamp. But they can't go with a $50 regular one because it's not approved by the animal welfare committee (one of the biggest bureaucratic parasite you'll ever see).  ::)

So in the end they bought the $800 paper cutter, and people wonder why science research cost so much money...
