Tools too heavy?
on: September 13, 2007, 05:12:30 AM
I really don't see how you guys say that the Leatherman Surge is "heavy."

Here's what I interchange that Surge with on a daily basis:

I walk around all day long working in maintenance doing odd jobs ranging from demolition to watering plants.  For me, these tools feel normal ...  ???

Btw, I'm 23, 5'6 175 pounds (yes, 30 lbs overweight).

I carry that SOG (among pockets full of other stuff), and the "weight" isn't a problem.

Now if I'm in my sweatpants or shorts around the house or working in my car in the driveway, I usually have a small flashlight in one pocket and a Juice in the other...no belt means no 1/2 lb tools :multi:

Welcome to the forums BTW

Freehand! Woot!  :ahhh

If those are the only tools you carry and use you should try subbing a PST in place of one of them. It will show how relative multi weights are, those tools are anchors compared to a PST. However, compared to a Squirt the PST is an anchor itself.

Thanks much for the welcome!  I've actually been a lurker for quite some time.   :pok:.

Part of the reason for not feeling the weight could be that I wear a thick leather belt.

As for the PST, my buddy has one that he's abused through the years and it's still kicking pretty hard.  He's dropped it, scraped the hell ouf ot if and even ran over it.  All the tools are dull/worn from use and oddly enough, it's not rusted one bit (maybe his oil-stained hands keep it nicely lubed).  It's fairly compact and light but ... the tools dont lock unless the whole thing's closed

Nah, but I've carried the Vic Spirit for a day.  Damn that thing was nice, and had a beautiful *click* sound when closing it.  The spirit's serrated cleaver-like knife and limited-travel scissors irked me enough to return it.

Actually, the Freehand just came in today and I laid it out with the rest of its beatheren so I figured, what the hell, and registered.

Compared to a piece of cotton the Squirt is an anchor.  :D  ;)

I never warmed up to my Freehand, and so haven't carried it even once. Looking at the picture above made me feel kinda guilty, so I pulled it back out of the box for a second look/second chance.

I still don't like it. Back in the box it goes.  :(

I switched from a supertool to a kick...I realized that I didn't need such a huge tool for my current job...all I really needed were pliers, a phillips driver and a good blade...In a package I could pocket...I miss the awl and saw from the super tool, but I don't need a saw now, and I pair the kick with a SAK for the awl. I keep the kick clipped to the right front pocket and the SAK rides in the pocket...this seems to work well, w/o a bulky tool on my belt..I'm not a huge fan of belt sheaths, it seems they're always getting in the way or something...but it was the only way to carry the ST. I'm much happier with my EDC now, but the super tool still goes with me hiking or situations where I need a more tools.

Yeah, I agree that weight is relative. If someone is used to a full tool belt, no MT on the market is going to feel "too heavy". But if you're only used to a keychain, or even a light-weight knife, almost any full-sized MT will take some getting used to. And of course it depend on how you carry it, I need a clip or sheath for anything bigger than a Juice...

In case anyone is interested, someone here went to a bit of effort to weigh all the tools in his collection, and list them in both grams and ounces...

There is an optional sheath with fold-down wheels like airport luggage has. Might be worth considering.

It's amazing how much larger the FreeHand is than the Surge....

I EDC a Surge and don't even notice it's weight, it's got just the right array and amount of tools for me, the "weight" is a non-issue, I could see how the FreeHand might be a tad EDC-Hostile though....

I think I'm sorta getting stronger in my right leg.  That's ok b/c I have to match my clutch leg's strength.  Going up the stairs with the Freehand in my HAND makes ascension MUCH easier
