Squirt ES4/PS4 Owner's Club
on: September 06, 2010, 09:57:28 PM
Everything has an owner's club these days so I though the PS4 and ES4 deserved one as well.

Some facts:
Weight: 54 grams/1.9oz
Size: 58 x 20 x 13mm
Colors: red, black, blue

Tools:
Needlenose pliers w/wire cutter (and wire strippers on ES4)
Scissors
Blade
Flathead screwdriver
Bottle opener
Wood/metal file
Phillips screwdriver

Supported tools:
Anything you can steal from another Squirt model including main tool scissors, awl etc.

User serviceable with a T6 Torx screwdriver (2x needed, one for each side) although some later models have come with rivets instead of pivots.

Can I mod it?
Yes, the PS4/ES4 is bery easy to mod as long as it has pivots. Yours truly have replaced the file with an awl and small flathead screwdriver from a P4. There is also a key mod on EDCforumsas well as a saw/serrated blade mod on backpackinglight (and probably others too).

Are there any accessories?
Not officially. LM makes a small sheath for the Micra that might work, and used to make one for the Squirts that you might be able to dig up somewhere. You can however add both a removable normal hex bit driver and a removable microbit driver to either the PS4 or ES4 very easily.

I don't have one  :( Where can I get one and how much is it?
Amazon have very decent prices in the US. For international customers I can recommend the eBay seller I got mine from. They are usually a lot more expensive locally, $100 in Norway and £35 in the UK for example.

So, who else has one, and do you actually use it?  :D

Well, technically you can't get the PS4 in Norway - not out yet. A few places have the P4 and S4. 599 nok, $100. Did actually find a place that has it cheaper, "only" 449 NOK.

A shop I was in today had some Juice models on the display. The S2 was 899 NOK, the same with the C2, and the CS4 was 1099 NOK. Thats $145/177

Mountain Equipment Co-op here in Canada now carries these (PS4).

Thinking of picking one of these up.

Got a red one from gunga a while back. Nice little tool that one. I keep it hanging off a Vic belt thingy and have been carrying it around ever since I got it. It doesn't see much use though, as the Spirit gets all the joy... :)

I bought one right when they came out so I have Torx screws instead of rivets. I love it. I don't really need another one, except for a mini Altoids box survival kit I am working on, but next time I am in a REI or an EMS store I think if I see a Torx model I'm just going to have to buy it (even though they don't have the best pricing).

From the looks of it all you need is a way to cut the steel, a way to make holes, a way to make the bit driver, and a tap to make the treaded hole.

Actually if you rread the text on my site I mention that the threaded hole is probably not the best solution, something slot-in and lockable would be better. That way you can use the bit slot as a second slot-in point for large accessories (like saws). That would be even harder to make. I don't have the steel, I don't have any of the tools necessary to do it - unfortunately. Maybe evil510 will see it and make one. I don't really need it anyways since it's so semi-permanenet but I just think it's not a bad idea to add 15mm lengthwise and get so many extra features

On a sidenote, ordered my third PS4 today. Second one came from a confused ebay seller who promised to send a pivoted one and sent a riveted one, so hopefully the same promise from this one will result ina a backup pivoted one.

I would like to join this club please  :D

I have a pivoted PS4 I got through gunga, been riding on my key-chain carabiner for a few months now. Wow, I didn't know the pivoted ones were desirable, or even that they were now making ones with rivets instead. Why did LM decide to do this? To keep costs down? To prevent users from modding them?

Anyway here's a (partial) picture of mine, don't have a camera right now so this is only picture I have

Yeah, all the pictures on all of the websites show screws, but that's not always what the tool comes with. :(
In order to be certain of having the right tool for every job.........one must first acquire a lot of tools

I like the x-acto knife Andreas!

I wonder if a single edged razor blade could be cut in half lengthwise and sandwiched between two smaller pieces of metal with a hole through them for the pivot, so that the blade would be replaceable once it dulls? ???

[feel free to use this idea if you like. I don't really have the tools necessary to undertake it myself.]

I had the same thought, and so did someone commenting on the video for this mod on youtube. However it's not practical. The tools are 1mm thick, making a blade holder that thin is practically impossible. Not to mention that for what I'm using the blade for - opening packaging - a real x-acto blade or razor wouldn't be able to pierce plastic that thick without breaking. Besides, this blade is fully replaceable as long as you have spare squirt/style blades, which basically means it'll cost me $13 (Style) to replace it once I run out of spare blades, which isn't too bad since the blade is strong enough to last a while

My original plan was to make the blade a liner locking blade but this was simpler and solved the same problem for me
