You have to remember though that patent law is only applicable in places where people actually want to pay attention to it. In many places, it's just a sheet of paper. As for importing it to the US, I think that for the most part it's a simple matter of the Feds not knowing what is legit and what isn't until someone complains, or the infringed company points it out. At that point there needs to be an investigation, lawsuit etc, and by the time all that's done, the offender has stopped importing them and long since switched to ripping someone else off. Of course it also isn't the knockoff manufacturer that's to blame- there's always a guy on our side that is commissioning this kind of work to be done, and he is usually back in the Caymans or Brazil or merely changed his name or declared bankruptcy by the time any poop gets near the fan.
All in all, a very expensive proposition with very little results.
