Victorinox SwissTool Ratchet vs. Wrench
on: September 11, 2010, 07:49:06 AM
Ok guys here it is, I have tried to get awnser for this in another thread, but think this deserve poll for it self. I know that some of you have ither Ratchet ither Wrench, but I am certain that there is lot of you having both.

This is my oppinion:

From cool side (TopGear cool wall  ;) ) Ratchet goes to SubZero side with Aston Martin DB9  :D but from application side of the story, is it worth? I mean how many torque can you apply to Ratchet, and how many to Wrench? Which one is more "user friendly"? Which one can have more applications in real situations?

2-3 days from now I'll order one of this two (ST Spirit Plus), ither with Ratchet or with Wrench (and there is 10$ lower price on Wrench also)! After reading a lot of rev's here, on SOSAK, and other sources I have choose ST Spirit plus as my MT over other models, and I don't want to buy one and say "OK this one is cool, but I'd like other one better!", aside that I want to keep it and use it for a long time (pass it to grandchildren one day  :D ), next time I'm buying MT will be some time from now for sure!

So you can see the dilema, which one is more to EDC tasks? Or should I say which one is BestBuy?

I bought the ratchet and haven't regretted it, it's just so versatile and often gets a bit where you need it when other tools won't fit in

I suspect the wrench is tougher.

I like the ratchet better and I think it's  pretty strong for a 1/4inch bit driver. I've cranked pretty hard on it before. My only problem with the ratchet is:

If you only have a bit in the ratchet, it is fairly easy to accidently push the bit all the way through when using it.

I can't vote as I only have the L-wrench and can't compare the two. I will say the wrench is a beast and very handy. As I said in another thread its what I go to if I need to use heavy torque. Remember that you can always buy the wrench or ratchet seperately, so if you don't find the one to your liking you can always buy the other and swap them out.

Thanks.

At one time it was easier to buy the wrench separately, but now the ratchet can be obtained easily as well.  So the good news is you can have both.

I voted ratchet though.  I don't think there is much issue with torque, because if you need high torque on the ratchet you put the bit in the end of the ratchet handle, and you put the extension on the ratchet and you can apply much torque.  Of course it is twisting the ratchet mechanism in a weird way, but I think it would be much stronger in this direction then when used as a rachet.

HOWEVER; one could buy the wrench, or not, and get the Ratchet Rocket RX from Top Peak and they might be happier and save a little money.

The ratchet is roughtly 105mm. I can't find a wrench right now, but since they both fit on the same bit-frame and in the same case, I'm guessing it's very close if not the same length.

Sounds great; I'd like to find a good pouch to carry the bit set separately.

The Victorinox pouch for 2-3 layer 111mm SAKs is a perfect fit width wise but a fraction too deep and long.  If you moved the velcro down a bit it would get around the length issue but you'd still need a piece of card or similar in there to make the depth a snug fit.

I've not come across a perfect fit pouch  :-\
I'm not taking any more mod orders at present, sorry.

Sounds like I have to find my Vix wrenches and test some pouches.

There is also some recent discussion on the Vic Ratchet and RatchetRockets in this Leatherman Forum thread.
