Most of mine were from 50p to 5pounds at car boot sales (flea markets)
I have spent up to 20 pounds on Ebay, all second hand and rusty  :D

I don't know if you have seen all the c**p and rust I have been buying here

http://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,20179.1000.html

I have trouble finding good and cheap handles here, the slim one above was 7 pounds something, (18pounds ish for a 36")
Not a lot but when you can buy a new Chinese hand ax for less than a fiver it makes you

Good luck in your search Santos

The problem with ebay is mostly postage. For some reason i can get an axe head posted from UK or USA for not much more than i can locally... and the local fellas have double the asking price!

I have been looking at flea markets and garage sales. Unfortunately there is a trend for overpiced Dealers of vintage/Rustic tools who clear up competition.. doesn't stop there either several garage sales i have gone to at advertised 8am start have had all there tools bought out in bulk by 7am. I'm sure these are the same guys that want $20-25 for an axe head you paid 50p for.

I did feel good though that i had picked up a folding german camp shovel free in a council clean up campaign and see an identical one being pushed by a dealer for $27 at a boot sale the following week..

Dealers go round the car boot sales early as well, it’s a bit annoying but I have to have coffee before I leave the house  ::) (maybe that’s why I buy lots of rust)

Aussie dealers seem to believe rust and pitting adds to the item value.  :twak:

Just wait till i actually do get a hatchet. When i go test it out there just may be a defficiancy in dealers afterwards :D

Went out to the garage to play with some plastic today, started tidying and ended up finishing this one off  :)

I had painted it with some engine paint that I had laying around, it matched the flecks of original (I think) paint that were on the head when I bought it last June

Nice, sparky.  Some mornings I go to the workroom and it's suddenly midnight.  Those are good days.

So is engine paint a fancy heat resistant thing then?

Yep, Both time and money fly when I’m out in my garage/workshop  :D

@Nuphoria,
Yes if you are working on your car and want to make your lump look pretty this is what you would paint it with, its heat proof and hopefully tough, I haven’t had a chance to play with it yet but fingers crossed

Its something like this but mine had been sitting around for a good few years

Thanks Mate, not sure how long the blue will stay on yet  :)

Almost any axe could do with a polishing/sharpening/repainting/rehandling etc., but only so long as you get it back to work.  I like to believe no tool is born to be a shed-dweller.  They only get more and more beautiful the more miles you put on em.

Keep bustin the wood, sparky.

The paint was an experiment as I found flecks of the original paint when I cleaned it up,
Its a lot easier to find in the garden now  :tu:

Today I got my first yard/garage sale hand axe. It is quite literally the first one I've seen available at any place I visit. Occasionally the response is 'yeah but we sold it' but more often then not people juct don't have them for sale.

Whats interesting is its made in Sweden, has 600 stamped (guessing that's 0.6kgs). I just picked it up admist all the other tools I piled into my hands. Will take photos of it in the morning before sending it to its vinegar bath. Need to learn sneaky fast ways to put a decent edge on axe. This one looks alittle worn on the top of the bite so it looks a little funny up close.

I don't know if you were aware but its a bit wet an windy in the UK at the moment
Got asked to tidy up a conifer

Decided to take 'Swampy' out for a change (hes a bit of a shelf queen, normally only gets any use on special occasions)
I forget how nice he is to use, really well balanced  (although today did remind me to slim the haft down a bit )

Raining all day today so I came home a soggy old Sparky  ::)

Fun day  :tu:

Swampy is on my workbench at the moment waiting for me to spend a little time slimming down the handle
