Looking at it this way up it might say M1
But to me that is looking at the stamp upside down

Nice Sparky! I am not sure if I would to shorten the handle. Or do you mean width of the handle? Either way, it will be a keeper.

Rubbing chalk dust in then dusting off the excess, can sometimes make vague stamp marks more legible. Keep dusting till just the root of the stamp is highlighted if necessary. Doesn't always work, but it can help.

The width, it's very chunky

Now where did I put my chalk?

Just wanted to axe a question

Used my 18" long Estwing camper axe to cut a dead tree in half that was hanging over driveway and being held up by a bunch of vines. I used a rope to pull it down than cut it in half with the axe so I could move it easier. I think I would have been better off with my sawzall, it was only 5-6" in diameter but very hard wood that had not rotted since it was suspended.

Question is do the longer handle axes work better due to their length and ability to gain more momentum and force in the swing or is it all in the build of the blade/weight of axe head/angle of grind/sharpness? Mostly wondering if there is a rule of thumb for tree diameter to axe size, cause it was slow and tough work getting through that particular tree

Yes the handle length can help and sharpness etc is very important but one can't forget technique.
Wood cutting can be an experience thing, the more you do the more you know the easier it is to do.
My rule of thumb for tree size is how much energy do I have... a big axe can take a lot of effort to use.

yeah 0 experience, and this is closer to being a hatchet than an axe, its pretty much a one hander, if the tree wasn't horizontal it would have been a much harder job

I think of it like driving in nails, if you are using big nails a big hammer is better but a little hammer will work
But how many hammers do you want carry/store?

Also
dry wood is twice as hard to cut than green wood
And if you are cutting wood that isn't touching the ground or a chopping block the spring in the wood absorbs
a lot of the  energy of the cut so you have to cut more times

You picked a tough one to cut BB  :salute:

yeah, after I had roped it down the base was still tangled in thickets and vines, so the part I was chopping was about a meter off the ground and it was very springy, but was a good learning experience, thanks for the wisdom Sparky & Zoidberg.
